Before she does, she mouths the words “Take a chance”to me.

“What did she say?” the doctor asks.

“Nothing,” I say, playing it cool.

I’ve gotten advice from one person already, and I need to think about that first. Although I doubt, I’ll ever take the chance, it’s worth considering.

“How’s Madison? And Lily?”

“They are good. They are okay.”

“How’s Lily? Nightmares?”

My shoulders raise and fall in sync with my unsteady heartbeats. Thankfully, I’m given a few minutes to collect myself when Mrs. Owen returns with a bottle of water for me.

“She’s fine. I don’t think she has the nightmares again.”

“Good,” he cracks a smile. “I still maintain that it was good you were the one who found her. There’s no telling if someone else would have brought her here, much less take her into their home.”

“It was the only way,” I say.

He chuckles.

“To you, it was. That’s the kind of person you're helping the next person in need. And you don't see it as an obligation. But… I don’t know if it's my place to ask,” he stops and looks at me.

It takes a few seconds for it to click that he’s asking for permission.

“Please,” I gesture, “go ahead.”

I put the bottle to my lips.

“Alright. Is Lily someone you fancy?”

The water comes flying out of my mouth.

“Uh.”

He laughs, slapping his leg. “You don’t have to answer. I know it’s what my wife was talking to you about, and I wanted to confirm what I already know.”

“Oh,” I say, wiping my shirt.

“What are you doing about it, though? You can’t tell me you’ll let a woman like that go?”

“Go?”

He nods. “Yes. She’s going to leave eventually, right? Once she regains her memory. And the way these things work, you never know when it’ll happen. Triggers are everywhere, and once the right one comes her way, the memories will come flooding back.

"You’ve had years with Madison, so I know how used to taking your time. But,” shakes his head, “sometimes you have to see the urgency in certain situations.”

“I think we’re fine with how things are,” I say, no longer interested in talking about Lily behind her back.

The doctor shrugs. “If you say so. Just know one thing: you’ll never know until you try. And if you never try, then you’ll never know.”

“Now,” he goes on when I don't respond, “you shouldn’t waste time sitting here. If you want to help, then head over to the hospital and make sure things are running smoothly.”

I put my hand to my chest, surprised. “Me?”

“Who else? You’re the only one I trust to entrust the administrative duties to for a day. I’ll be back tomorrow.”
