Then,” I frown as I remember the certainty in his tone, “he said something along the lines that it could be possible I lived alone.”

“And that was weird?”

I nod. “Yeah. It wasn’t what he said, though. It was how he said it. Like he was sure. As though he had firsthand knowledge. I know it sounds ridiculous—”

“It doesn’t,” Logan says quickly. “It’s like when you said your nightmares felt real. You’re the one who experienced these things, Lily. If you're sure that it’s the way they happened, then I believe you. Is that all that happened?”

I shake my head. “When he talked about having flashes or nightmares, it seemed like he wanted to say yes. And he was all up in my face, too.”

“All up in your face? Can you explain? I’m sorry if I’m asking too many questions, but I need to be certain before I tell you what is going on.”

My heart is pounding faster now, but I try to compose myself to give him a better response.

“He was… eager? I think? I don’t know how to explain it in words, but I was deliberating about telling him that the nightmares had returned, and I sort of looked away, and when I looked back, his face was really close to mine,” I say.

“It scared me out of my skin, but he said it's one of the ways by which I might get my memory back, through fear. I was doubtful, though. What’s wrong?”

Logan puts his hand into his pocket and brings out a folded paper. I collect it, and upon opening it, my eyebrows furrow.

I look at him.

“Isn’t this supposed to be confidential?” I ask, feeling a little embarrassed.

The paper contains some things I told Doctor Owen when we last met, and I might have said something about how I felt towards Logan.

He waves his hands. “I didn’t read it. I saw your name and recognized Doctor Owen’s writing, so I didn’t read it. But here’s what happened. Yesterday, I went to see the doctor. He asked me to make sure things were running smoothly at the hospital since he couldn’t make it.

“I did. But he also asked that I get a patient’s file for him. When I went to his office, I noticed the door, which was supposed to be locked, was open.

“And I found Michael inside.”

I gasp softly. “You think he broke into the office and stole my document?”

He nods. “Not the document, though, because I couldn’t find your file there. At least the one this paper is from. But he was hiding this particular paper.”

“Why?” I ask, confused. “What would he want with it? To know about my personal life? I mean… what does he want to do with the fact that I have feelings for you?”

It takes a second before I realize that the last statement slipped out, and I slap my hand over my mouth.

“I—” Logan starts to say, but I shake my head.

“It’s fine. You don’t have to say anything. It’s just a feeling. What do you think? That he’s up to something else?”

Logan nods again. “I do. I don’t know why I didn’t connect the dots until now, but when you said you were kidnapped?”

“Yeah?”

“I think you were. Someone took you from wherever you lived before and brought you here. But you escaped. Then I found you in the middle of the road. You must have taken a fall, and it would explain the bruise on your forehead when I took you to the hospital.”

Goosebumps rise on my arms, and I rub them as a tight feeling settles in my chest.

“I was kidnapped. And—” The dots begin to connect. “You think Doctor Michael had a hand in it?”

“I think so. Here’s my proof.”

And then he tells me what Ethan told him. The notorious crime syndicate was spotted here in Colorado at some point before they went underground.

He tells me about how the new leader has made it a priority to take revenge on people who were complacent in the major arrest that led to the gang dissolving years ago. And then Logan tells me about the doctor that was shot.
