I gasp loudly. “The person I saw!”

“I think so. I don’t know,” he says, emotions swirling on his face. “Ethan said the man had no known family, so I concluded he wasn’t the same person.”

But my mind has latched onto other reasons.

“Could it be that he was a distant family member? Maybe we saw once a year, that’s why nobody knew. Or,” the thought seems terrifying, but I voice it out, “we might have been dating secretly.

I need to find out, Logan. What do I do?”

“Whatever you decide, I’ll support you. But first, we have to keep things under wraps. If my suspicions are right and Michael is involved, we don't want to tip him off. We want to catch him to find out where the rest are.”

Is that why he showed up out of the blue?

And the visits? Was he trying to figure out the best way to take me away?

“I should go to the hospital,” Logan says, getting up. “You and Madison, stay here. Don’t open up to anyone, even if it’s someone you trust. If you sense that you’re in danger, call me. Immediately.”

“There’s something else, isn’t there?” I ask.

He nods. “There is, but it isn't for you to worry about. For now. I’ll tell you later. I promise.”

I watch him walk out the door, the blood rushing through my veins and pumping in my ears.

Have I been in proximitytothe person in my dreams the whole time? The thought leaves me frightened, but I steel myself and make sure the front door is locked before checking on the other exits.

Madison comes out of her room as I return to the living room.

“Did my dad go out?”

I nod. “Yeah, but he’ll be back soon,” I say.

My phone begins to ring, and I answer it immediately when I see it’s Logan.

“Lily,” he says in a serious tone. “Michael is nowhere to be found. He didn't show up at the hospital, and from the looks of things, he left in a hurry.”

My heart drops.

CHAPTER 19

Logan

I pace around the living room, rubbing my face with my hands.

“I’m sure they’ll find him,” Lily says. “I’m certain of that.”

“I know,” I say.

“Then you should sit down. You’re scaring Madison.”

My daughter, who took one look at me after I came back home and promptly went to sit in a corner, stares at me with concern in her eyes. I exhale and go to sit on a couch.

Lily stands beside me, putting a hand on my shoulder.

“I’m the one who should be worked up, you know? Since they found all that stuff in his belongings—my things. All I had on me when they kidnapped me. I haven’t even had the chance to go through them because I’m worried about what I’ll find.”

Right, I realize. She’s the one whose life got uprooted, and I’m…I’m scared.I’m afraid because I failed to protect her. The kidnapper was right here.

“Is something on your mind? Something other than what is happening. You can tell me, you know.”
