Doctor Owen smiles. “See? You know something now.”

It takes a minute before I put the pieces together, and when I figure it out, I burst out laughing until my stomach hurts. Good one, Doctor Owen.

Maybe things aren’t so bad after all.

A couple of hours later, Dr. Owen returns to the room and finds me seated on the edge of the bed, staring off into space and lost in thought.

“Miss,” he says.

I stir out of my thoughts, which were blank for the most part, except for the agitation about not knowing who I am or where I come from or the possibility that my memory will return soon enough that I can find out if my dream was just a dream or something that actually happened.

“I was waiting for you,” I say. “The nurses said I’m good to go, but—” I laugh nervously, “—there’s nowhere for me to head to, is there? I have no name, no identity, and nobody looking for me. For all I know, I could be an orphan and a recluse, and I was kidnapped by a gang and brought here to…”

“Colorado,” he fills in. “And I’m fairly certain that your memory will return.”

“When?” I ask the million-dollar question. “Can you actually give me a time frame of when you expect me to return to normal?”

When he remains silent, I nod and click my tongue. “Yeah, I thought so. I’m not trying to take it out on you, doctor, because none of this is your fault, but I’d appreciate it if you’d stop being so optimistic. It gives me hope, and then… reality isn’t like that, is it?”

He sighs, and I can tell I have him stumped. Then he brightens up.

“I know we don’t know when you will regain your memory, but I’ve brought good news. The man who saved you, Mr. Fraiser, has offered to house you in his cabin—which is spacious and a good environment for easy recovery—as long as it takes for you to remember.”

The man who saved me.

I suddenly feel nervous and rub my sweaty palms on the sweatpants that the hospital kindly lent me from their lost and found, along with an oversized shirt.

“He’s here?”

Dr. Owen nods. “Yeah. Just checking in with the nurse who will come by to check on you from time to time.”

Before he’s done with his statement, an attractive man—looking to be in his early thirties with a five o’clock shadow and brown hair that looks due for a cut—walks in with an impatient young girl holding his hand. She lets go of his hand almost as soon as they walk into my room, coming to stand in front of me.

“Hi,” she says softly, and it sets off a warm, fuzzy feeling in my body, “are you okay now? Daddy said the doctor would discharge you today.”

“Madison,” the man, her father presumably admonishes, “remember what I said about boundaries?”

For some reason, I feel comfortable replying to the kid.Is it because she’s too small to pose a threat?

“I’m okay,” I reply with a half-smile.

“Good. Daddy has been cleaning out a room for you because you will be staying with us until you can remember things.”

The man pulls her back at this point and offers me an apologetic smile. I can't tell if he is as eager as his daughter to have me in his house. Maybe I am bad at reading people’s emotions that aren’t presented at the surface.

He stretches out his hand. “Logan Fraiser, I’m—”

“The person who saved me,” I chip in, taking his hand. “Thank you for saving me. Doctor Owen said it could have been worse without your timely intervention.”

His jaw twitches. “I wouldn’t say I saved you. You were standing in the middle of the road, and I stopped before I hit you.”

I shrug. “It's the same thing, isn’t it? If you hadn’t seen me, it would have been a fatal accident. It takes a good driver to be that observant, so thank you.”

He nods. “My pleasure. I hope you don’t feel uncomfortable about coming to stay with us. I have enough rooms at the cabin to ensure you always have your privacy.”

“Oh no.” I shake my head. “I am the one imposing, aren’t I? I should make sure it isn’t uncomfortable to have me intrude.”

‘It’s alright,” Logan says. Then, he turns to Doctor Owen. “Is there anything I need to pick up? The nurses have given me a list of do’s and don’ts, but I’m wondering if there’s anything else I should handle.”
