The part of my brain that controls breathing goes on hiatus when Logan dips me low and presses his lips to mine—gentle at first and then heated, with tongues and all.

“Okay,” he smiles as he lifts me. “I feel better now. That was a much-needed dose of serotonin. Did it work for you?”

“Absolutely,” I say, still reeling from the kiss.

“Good. Because I was hoping it would balance out what I have to tell you.”

Oh. My heart drops to my stomach, and my stomach bottoms out.

“Is it about Michael?”

Logan nods. “Yeah.”

I exhale. “I’m going to need to sit, then.”

My legs, slightly trembling, carry me to my bed before they give up. Logan sits beside me, and I’m instantly thankful for his warm hands that take mine, combating the cold that seeps through my body.

“Ethan called me thirty minutes ago. They’ve found more about Michael.”

“Hit me with it,” I say, hiding my emotions.

It’s only been a day and some more since my world was turned… and I don’t know if it’s the right side up. I’ve been putting off dealing with it, leaning on Logan for support, and keeping my mind occupied with Madison’s antics.

But I have to face it. Now or some other time.

“We can wait,” he says as though reading my mind.

I shake my head. “No. I want to face it head-on. Now that I have you here.”

He tucks me closer to his body. “I’m not going anywhere. You know that, right?”

“I do,” I whisper. “But I’m scared. I—finding out that I loved someone years ago and they died that way and then getting kidnapped as a revenge ploy. Losing my memory… I don’t know. It feels like everything gets taken from me.

No matter how much I try to hold on to it.”

Logan tilts my chin to face him with a finger and places the softest, gentlest kiss on my lips. It brings tears to my eyes, and he wipes them away.

“Hey. I’m here. I promise. I won’t let go. I’ll hold your hand all the way; you don’t have to doubt that.”

I nod shakily. “Okay. Okay.”

“Here’s what we know. Michael, not his real name, is one of the top members of the gang. One of the members they captured confirmed this.

“He was spying on someone where he worked before, and they sent him to look for you when you escaped. He got your belongings from the people who took you, that’s why your belongings were found in his room.”

“Will they find him?” I ask.

That is all that matters. Justice.

Logan nods. “Yes. I’m using all the connections at my disposal, and Ethan is working on it too. A nationwide APB is out for him. He has nowhere to hide.”

“Okay, okay.” I take a deep breath. “It’s going to be fine.”

He nods.

“Yeah. It’s going to be because I will be here. With you. All the way. You don’t have to do this alone, and when you can’t deal with the thoughts in your head, come to me. Use me, please.”

Tears run down my face as I nod over and over, writing his words in my heart like runes that hold magic.
