He leans in to kiss me again when there’s a knock on the door. I immediately go still.

“It’s the doctor and his wife,” Logan assures me. “They called and asked if it was okay to stop by on the way home. If you don’t want to meet them, I can make an excuse.”

“I will.”

Mrs. Owen crushes me in a hug the second the door opens.

“My darling,” she says. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry, darling.”

Her arms—motherly and warm—have sobs tearing out of my throat, leaving me a shaky mess, relying on her to stand upright. I don’t know how long we stand there, but I feel lighter when she pulls away to look at me.

Mrs. Owen brushes the tears from my cheeks.

“I wasn’t at the hospital yesterday, and when I heard what happened,” she shakes her head. “I’m sorry, my love. I should have noticed that he was hiding something. After all, I’m the one who took him into my home.”

I shake my head. “It’s not your fault. It’s nobody’s fault. You took care of me all this while.”

I turn to Doctor Owen. “Thank you. For everything.”

“I’ve spoken to the detectives. I’ll do everything I can to make sure he’s caught,” the doctor says.

“Thank you.”

“Why don’t you come in?” Logan suggests.

Mrs. Owen shakes her head.

“It’s okay. We just came to check up on Li—Kaylee. We should leave you two alone now. Please don't hesitate to call if there’s anything we can do to help.”

I assure them we will, and after another hug, they leave.

Logan shuts the door and turns to me.

“Are you—that’s the wrong question.” He shakes his head.

I smile, tiptoeing to kiss him on the cheek. “It isn’t. I’m not okay, but I think I’ll be. I know I’ll be.”

Because I have a family now. I have a home. I know my name. And I know that no matter what, I’ll always have Logan and Madison—the two people who matter mostin the world to me.

EPILOGUE

Logan

“No, no, you don’t,” I say, hurrying out of the car and going to the back door. “You should never open the door by yourself, Mrs. Fraiser. It’s my duty.”

Kaylee laughs as she takes my hand, cradling our newborn, swaddled in soft clothing with her other hand.

“Thank you, darling.”

“You’re welcome.” I kiss her cheek.

“Madison,” I tell my daughter as she exits from the passenger side. “You can get the trunk, can’t you?”

“Yup!” she says proudly. “I’m ten now! Ten and some months! But I should help Mommy with Lily first, right?”

“I’ll handle her, sweetheart. She’s still the size of a pea.”

“A tiny pea,” Madison replies, deadpan.
