I feel a jolt of excitement while every inch of me is alert.

“Oh, no, not at all. This is a great surprise.”

“We just wanted to call and personally tell you how impressed we were with your band’s audition,” Alex continues. “You stunned us all with your voice. You have incredible talent. It really stood out. And we knew right away that Broken Gears is exactly the band we’ve been looking for. You’ve got the gig!”

I can barely contain my excitement, my voice shaking as I reply, “Really? That’s incredible news! Thank you so much! I can’t believe it.”

She’s laughing across the phone piece. “I’ll be in contact with you tomorrow with more information. Have a wonderful night.”

“Oh, thank you so much.”

Returning to the table, everyone is looking at me expectantly.

“Oh my God!” I’m smiling, with tears in my eyes. “We got the gig!” I exclaim, unable to keep the joy out of my voice as I bounce on my toes. “The judges were blown away by our performance!”

The diner seems to erupt in celebration, with everyone up on their feet congratulating us and cheers coming from surrounding tables. The excitement is electric, and at that moment, I feel like all our hard work has finally paid off. Like I’m floating…. Is this really happening?

“This is... this is huge.” We’re going to open for The Midnight Echoes, and it feels like the start of something truly amazing.

Jake wraps an arm around me, pulling me close.

“You’re going to be a star, pretty girl. And don’t even think that once you become famous, you’re going to leave me.”

I’m laughing at him. “I’m not going anywhere.”

That’s when Dad’s phone rings, grabbing our attention. He steps aside to take the call, his expression turning serious. I watch him, curious about who could be calling him so late. When he glances up in our direction, we all fall silent, sensing that the call might be about us.

Dad hangs up and returns to the table, his wide eyes finding Jake's.

“What’s going on?” I ask, the suspense building.

“That was the College Advisory Committee,” Dad starts with a steady voice. “They’ve been trying to reach you all day, Jake. The scout at today’s game wants to draft you into the big leagues. He’s planning to call you this week. This is incredible news!”

For a moment, Jake looks stunned, as if he can’t quite believe what he's hearing. Then, he lets out a roar of excitement, capturing the attention of everyone in the diner.

“Yes!” he exclaims, his face splitting into a huge grin. “I knew I’d get it if they just got to watch me play properly.” He gets up and gives my dad a massive bear hug, and Dad pats him on the back, a look of pride on his face. “Thank you, Coach, for everything.”

“And you'll be happy to know, you were the only team player they're interested in,” Dad adds with a growing grin.

I can’t help but laugh, knowing he’s referring to Tyler.

“Karma, how I love you,” I say under my breath, still laughing.

Around us, the diner erupts in a new wave of excitement. Trev comes over, extending his hand to Jake with a genuine smile. “Congrats, man,” he says, shaking Jake’s hand. “This is huge.”

“Thanks, man. Appreciate it.”

The atmosphere is buzzing with electricity and excitement. Jake’s dream coming true, our band getting the gig–it feels like everything is falling into place.

Jake’s at my side again, embracing me, our foreheads touching.

“We need to celebrate big time,” I say.

“Oh, it’s coming.” He winks, then he steals a quick kiss before hugging me, pressing me tightly against him.

I can’t remember the last time I smiled so much.

And who would’ve thought? Sometimes, the decisions you think are going to be a total disaster end up being the best things you ever do. Life’s funny like that.
