“Shh,” Marty soothed.“Everything is going to be all right.”

“No, it’s not,” she said into his shirt.“You can’t marry me.I’ll ruin your life.”

“Sweetheart, even though we haven’t said the vows yet, I’m all in with you.For better or worse. We’ll figure it out together.”

Felina climbed down from the truck and wrapped her arm around Lucas’s waist.

He held her close while Marty tried to calm Trish.

“I should’ve told you everything,” Trish said.“But I was afraid you’d change your mind...about us.”

“Nothing will change my mind about us,” he said.“Beau and Romeo filled me in on what’s been happening.I wish I’d known sooner. We could’ve figured out something before this. You’ve been carrying this burden by yourself for too long.Let me help.”

She looked up at him with tears running down her cheeks.“And if I go to jail?”

“We’ll hire the best lawyer.”He looked over Trish’s head at Lucas and Felina.“Thank you for bringing her home.I’ll take care of her now.I should’ve been taking care of her all along.”He kissed the top of her head.“I love you, Trish.I’ll do everything in my power to make things better.”

“Beau and Romeo will stand guard tonight,” Lucas said.“We’ll figure out where to go from here tomorrow.”

Marty nodded.“Thank you.”His gaze went to Felina.“And thank you for being there for her. You’re a good friend.”

“Take good care of her,” Felina said.“Don’t break her heart.”

“I won’t,” he said.

Once Marty and Trish were safely inside the cottage, with Beau and Romeo there to provide protection, Lucas held the door for Felina.

She climbed in and buckled her seatbelt.

Lucas slid into the driver’s seat and backed out of the driveway.

“I’m glad Trish has Marty,” she said softly.“I think they’ll make it as a couple.”

“No regrets?”Lucas asked.

Felina shook her head.“None.”

Lucas smiled.Felina was completely free of her prior relationship, which left her open to possibilities. He wanted to be that possibility.No.He wanted to be more than a possibility.

He shifted into drive and pulled out onto the road.“Home?”

Felina hesitated for a moment, a frown pulling at her eyebrows.“No.”

He cast a glance her way, a sense of trepidation washing over him at the determined set of her chin.“Where to?’

She stared straight ahead.“Crabtree Manor.”

Chapter13

Lucas drovethrough town and out into the country.“What’s the plan?”

“I’m not exactly sure,” Felina said. The idea to go to Crabtree Manor was the culmination of several images and sound bites she’d seen or heard throughout the day.

“Shelby said the gardener informed her that Mrs.Crabtree was in New Orleans for the night.”

Felina nodded.“I understand.”

“She won’t be there for us to ask questions,” Lucas continued.
