Lucas turned off the engine.“Are you sure you want to do this?”

“Yes,” she said.“Have you ever acted on a gut feeling?”

Lucas drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly.“I have.A number of times.”

“Was your gut right?”

“Every damned time,” he admitted.

She pressed a hand to her belly.“My gut’s telling me to do this.”

“Mine isn’t,” he countered.

She looked at him in the starlight filtering through the trees and windshield.“Is your gut telling you this is a bad idea?”

He stared into her eyes for a long moment, then answered, “No.Come on.Let’s do this and get back home. The sheriff’s department will question her tomorrow.”

He reached into the console for his gun and a flashlight.

Felina slipped the knife Lucas had given her out of her purse and hooked the sheath onto the waistband of her jeans.

Lucas slid out of his seat and then dropped to the ground. Before he could go around to help Felina out, she climbed down from her seat and hurried to meet him at the front of the truck.

“As long as there isn’t any traffic, we’ll follow the road,” he said.“I don’t want to get lost in the woods and spend the rest of the night finding our way back to the truck.”

Lucas led the way, walking along the gravel road and then the paved road.

Thankfully, no other vehicles passed, and they were saved from hiding in the ditch with the snakes and alligators native to the bayou.

Felina shivered at the thought of stepping on a snake. She didn’t dare think about coming face-to-face with an alligator.

When they came within sight of the brick and wrought iron gate, he stopped short and studied the fence. As impressive as the gate was, it only kept vehicles from driving onto the property; the rest of the fence surrounding the property was made of metal pipes welded together. All they had to do was easily climb over or duck through it.

Felina ducked through, glad it wasn’t barbed wire or a massive stone wall they would have had to scale.

Once on the other side, Lucas avoided the open, manicured lawns and kept to the tree line and shadows.

Felina followed, doing what he did. When they reached the clearing where the house sat bathed in moonlight, Lucas stopped in the shadows.

Felina came to stand beside him.

Not a single light shone through the windows.

Felina was mildly relieved. If Mrs.Crabtree was home, surely, she would have left a light on in a hallway in case she needed to move around at night.

“The front is too open,” Lucas said.“We’ll approach from the rear.”

Again, Felina followed Lucas.

Again, he kept to the tree line, making a wide circle around the house until they were directly behind it.The garage was separate from the house, with four overhead doors.

Lucas eased up to one of the windows on the side and peered inside.“How many cars should be in here?”

“I don’t know,” Felina said.

“Do you know what kind of car Mrs.Crabtree normally drives?”

“A white expensive sports car.”She moved up beside him and peered through the window.Low light glowed inside the garage just enough for her to make out the vehicles within.A white crew cab pickup occupied the farthest bay.“The truck was Mr.Crabtree’s.I’m surprised she hasn’t sold it yet.”
