“To take down your profile from Monstrous Deals.”

I stiffen. I didn’t know he actually expected me to take down the profile. “You asked me not to take any other clients,” I say carefully.

“Yes. And I want the profile taken down. Is that so much to ask for after all this?”

I had been leaning against his chest, but now I sit and put a little distance between us. He doesn’t want me to act around him. He wants me to be myself, but now he wants to make this into a transaction, like he can buy me.

Yeah, OK, I know how sex work is, but this isn’t the same. Even if I don’t take on other clients right now, it would be stupid to take down my profile and lose any visibility for when he inevitably gets tired of our arrangement. He can offer terms for a contract, but I get to agree to them or not. I’m still my own person.

“Oh, I see.” I fold my arms across my chest and sit back against the seat with a huff.

“I’m not sure you do.” Erserro’s body language is just as hostile as mine. Only I’m no threat to him at all. I should be feeling a lot more scared of him right now. I wonder when was the last time anyone told him no.

“Explain it to me, then.” I tell him sweetly. Of course he knows I’m bubbling with rage under the surface. I’m doing a terrible job of hiding it. The fact he brings down all my walls is working against me in this case.

The car stops and I realize we’re at his mansion. He hasn’t even asked me if I’d like to come home with him. “Did you think you bought me as well as my time?” I glare at him.

I can’t make out his expression beneath his glasses which is infuriating. “Didn’t I?”

The car crunches up the gravel drive and in the silence between us the sound of the tires is magnified.

“No.” I hold his gaze as best I can without seeing his eyes.

We stay like that for a long moment until the car comes to a complete stop.

“Get out.” I think he’s talking to me, until I start to move and he grabs my arm. “Matthew, get out and leave the car here. You may leave. You’re not needed again today.”

I open my mouth to protest I certainly will need a lift home, but Erserro cuts me off. “Didn’t I, Tamsin?” This time it’s louder. More forceful. His hand tightens around my arm.

My skin flushes with anger and I try to pull away from him.

The driver’s door opens and closes again.

We’re alone.

“What do I need to pay, then? Name your price.” The words are low, growled. Threatening.

I keep my chin up. “You don’t own me.” Behind me, I fumble with the door. To my surprise, it opens. I tumble out onto the gravel and stagger to my feet.

Erserro, of course, is after me. There’s a rip of fabric as his trousers tear and his legs lengthen into a tail and I’m running, not even knowing where I can go, but heading stupidly for the house.

I make it through the front door, but not in time to slam it behind me.

What would that even achieve? He owns the house. I don’t even have a key. I’m lucky it wasn’t locked.

“Tamsin. Dammit, don’t run from me.”

I keep running.

“Tamsin.”

He’s right behind me. I feel him all along my back as a tingle of sensation at the back of my neck.

A powerful arm snakes around my waist and I’m hauled off my feet and back against Erserro’s solid chest.

I struggle. I kick my legs. I’m so mad I don’t even think about how dangerous it might be to piss off the monster who can literally kill me with a look.

“Let me go!”
