I tell myself the same thing for three weeks. Finally, I tuck the necklace back inside its bag and push it to the back of the drawer with my feelings.

I’m doing well.

I haven’t cried for the last two days.

I angrily brush away a single tear. Not wallowing. Moving on.

Time to check my bank account. I’ve been putting it off.

I wince as I open the app. It’s probably not good. I’ve sold most of the things I listed, but I also haven’t worked in three weeks. Plus, I didn’t get paid for the booking with Chaldro I walked out on with Chaldro.

I stare at the number on my screen in disbelief for a long moment when it loads.

How is it possible I’ve got thousands in there?

Opening the transaction history, I track through until I find a deposit.

What I see destroys my two-day streak.

My eyesight grows blurry and I sniff, staring at the description: Ssalaar Inc. He’s still depositing money into my account. I should have known he’d do this.

It’s so unbearably sweet. I cover my hand with my mouth and press my phone into my chest, sobbing at how unfair this whole thing is. He’s such an idiot!

Well, I’m not giving up on him. I’m going to track him down and force him to listen to me while I explain again. I do not careabout the bite, or the change, or the eyes or any of it. I just want him.

I wipe my face and find some shoesIn the mirror by the door, I catch a glimpse of myself and do a double-take.

OK. First, I will shower and brush my hair and find an outfit that makes me look amazing. Then I will track him down.

Two hours later, I again check my reflection on the way out the door. Fluffing my hair I smile to myself. No way he’s rejecting me again. My dress is low cut and shows off my cleavage, the skirt is tight and hugs my ass, and my lipstick is bright just like my mood.

It occurs to me that I never gave back the key to his mansion. I guess he might have changed the locks or something. He’ll be mad if I barge in there without telling him. Of course, I’d message or call, but since he hasn’t answered any of my messages in weeks, I think it’s a waste of time.

When the door opens and I step into the familiar guest suite, my mind is instantly filled with sultry memories of being pampered and pleasured. Just the scent in here is full of pleasant associations.

My hand trembles a little when I reach for the handle of the red door that leads into the rest of the mansion. It’s quiet, but I expect that. If he’s here, there won’t be any staff about.

I slowly push open the door and call out. “Erserro?”

There’s no answer. No hiss of displeasure.

I gradually raise my gaze from my toes and dare a look around. So far so good, and not frozen.

I call out before I enter each room, but they’re all empty.

He’s not in the garden or even the cellar. He’s not anywhere.

My heart sinks. That would have been too easy.

When I call the casino, I focus on keeping my voice firm and business-like. Not desperate like I’m feeling. A woman with a cultured accent answers. “Star Casino Management. How can I help you?”

“Yes, hello. I had an appointment with Mr. Ssalaar today, but I can’t seem to track him down. I’m wondering if there’s been some error, or if I went to the wrong place.”

“Oh, that’s strange. I’m certain he’s out of town at the moment. What was your name? I’ll just check his calendar.”

Thinking quickly, I give her the first thing I can come up with. There’s no way he’ll see me if he knows it’s me. “My name is Sarah Fielding. I represent Chaldro Charister who is filing a lawsuit against Ssalaar Inc.” That should get his attention.

“Hmm.” There’s a pause where I hear papers moving. “I can’t see you here. And it definitely says he’s unavailable.”
