I never had a funeral for her. It seemed like a waste of money I didn’t have. Now I wish I had. Most of her friends are gone now, sadly, but there are still a few. They send me Christmas and birthday cards that I don’t reply to.

But this month, I’ve been planning a memorial.

I slide on the first pair of heels I find in the closet and quickly change into a new dress. I don’t have time for a full face of makeup, but I put on some mascara and lipstick. It’ll have to do. I’ve just enough time to actually brush my hair before my phone buzzes.

Jordan: I’m downstairs, babe

Yep. Fuckboy. What kind of person doesn’t know how to use a doorbell?

I snatch my purse and lock up, pasting on my best ‘I’m fine’ smile before I descend the last flight of stairs.

Jordan is standing in the foyer, looking down at his phone screen. When he notices me, he locks the screen a little too quickly and shoves it into his pocket. “Hi. So nice to meet you. You look amazing.”

The words feel like he’s painting by numbers. Saying what he thinks I want to hear. There’s no meaning in them.

“Thanks. You too.”

We go through the motions. He opens my door. I laugh at his jokes.

At the restaurant, when he orders a fancy bottle of wine, I start laying bets with myself. He’s going to skip dessert and suggest I come back to his place. He’s going to expect to fuck me since he’ll probably pay for the meal. A bold move on a first date.

He’s going to be disappointed.

Sure enough, the waiter comes to clear our plates after we finish our meals. “Can I get you the dessert menu?”

Jordan reaches across the table for my hand, leaning in closer. “What do you think, Tamsin? Should we head somewhere quieter, so we can really get to know each other?”

I just manage not to roll my eyes. I giggle. “Oh, I’m getting a pretty good picture already.”

“Aw, come on. The view of the city from my balcony is amazing.”

It’s highly unlikely it beats the view from the penthouse apartment at Star Suites, but I smile. The waiter is still hanging around awkwardly. “The dessert menu, sir?”

I shake my head at him. “No thank you. Just the check.”

Jordan smiles triumphantly. “Perfect. Why don’t you let me get this one? My treat.”

I thank him, but when we leave the restaurant, I stop him before we get to the carpark. “Thanks for a lovely evening, Jordan. It was so great to meet you. I think I’m going to grab a taxi home, so don’t worry about giving me a ride. Thanks again for dinner.”

He frowns. “I thought you were coming back to mine.”

“Maybe some other time.”

He steps closer. “After I bought you dinner?”

“Thank you. That was such a lovely gesture.”

“Oh come on. Don’t pretend to be some kind of nun. I saw your profile on that website.”

“What website?” I don’t like where this is going.

“Come on you little monster fucker. What’s wrong? Your pussy so loose from fucking all those monsters that you can’t deal with a real man’s cock, is that it?”

I open my mouth to tell him his tiny human dick will do nothing for me after two monster dicks, but there’s a blur of movement and a masculine arm shoots between us. A massive hand closes around Jordan’s throat and he’s slammed to the brick wall. “I could have killed you already by now.” Erserro’s voice is cold. He doesn’t raise it. He doesn’t need to. “Do you want to know why I haven’t?”

“What the fuck?” Jordan’s feet flail in the air as he scrambles for purchase he can’t find. His face starts to turn red.

I’m too stunned to say anything. I’m not even sure I want to.
