Bash

I’m sorry. I just found out last night.

I dropped my phone, and Zander grinned at me as he sat down in the single empty chair, leaving his box of candy on the other table.

The speech and plan I had stayed up most of the night memorizing?

They weren’t designed for a demon.

Especially not theVillin brother who didn’t like me.

What was I supposed to say to him?

“You’re meeting me, Miles.” He sprawled out on the chair, the same way he had the few times I’d seen him. He had this… presence. He always did. Like he walked into the room, and everyone had to look at him. His hair was always a mess, and his eyes glittered with mischief in a way that made you want to lean closer so he would let you in on whatever he was up to.

“The deliveries you’ve arranged for me are ofyourblood?” I had to ask, just to make sure there hadn’t been some kind of miscommunication.

“Yep.” His eyes met mine, his gaze warm.

I waited for more, but that was all he gave me.

Justyep.

“Did Sebastian tell you why we’re meeting?” I was off balance. So damn off balance.

Somehow, I needed to recover and make my speech.

“He did.” Zander’s gaze held mine.

“So you know you’re my potential mate?”

“I do.”

“And?”

“And it works both ways, Sweetheart.”

I blinked at the nickname.

No, I definitely wasn’t on board with cutesy nicknames.

But what was he saying—that I was his potential mate too? I supposed it made sense for it to work that way, but I didn’t know what that meant for me. Or him. Or…us.

I cleared my throat, and opened my folder. “Right. Well. I’ve been drinking your blood, and I seem to be somewhat addicted. Apparently, I can no longer drink from anyone else. To avoid dying of starvation, I came up with a few possible options.”

“Okay.”

I went on, “The most nuclear is moving in together and sealing the mate bond. I assumed you were human, so I included turning you into a vampire in that plan, but obviously it’s not a factor given you’re… you.”

“Right.”

I didn’t look up from the folder, not sure I wanted to get trapped in an eye-lock with him again. “According to Charlie, vampire mates with a sealed bond can keep each other alive. Their blood sustains each other, somehow. He doesn’t understand the mechanics behind it, and I?—”

“Magic,” Zander supplied. “The mechanics aremagic.”

“Sure. Well, sealing the bond seems drastic. It’s the only possibility that really guarantees me any measure of life-long stability, so I’d like to consider it. The alternative possibilities we could try out first would be a once-weekly meetup where I drink from you. Or?—”

“Twiceweekly. According to the vampires I spoke to, you should be feeding at least two times a week to properly transition your body into full-fledged vampirehood. Given the way you were starved when you were first turned, it’s particularly important for you. The vampires recommended three times a week, which is why I’ve been delivering Monday, Wednesday, and Saturdays.”
