“Do you two mind if I volunteer too?” Toby asks. “Seeing how you were supposed to ask me to help out anyway.” He doesn’t sound mad about it, though. Instead, he makes light of the fact we deliberately didn’t tell him about volunteering.

“I don’t see why not.” I look up and give him a forced smile. “I know the rec center needs the help, and the kids seem to love you.”

He nods. “They’re good kids.”

The idea of spending an hour with Toby every Sunday sends some sick thrill through me. Because even though I’m hurting and heart broken, I still love him. I still want to be around him even though I shouldn’t. Maybe I’m a masochist. Sure feels like it sometimes.

“You coming next Saturday?” Toby asks me, referring to their first hockey game next week.

“Wouldn’t miss it.” This time the smile I give him is real. The one he gives me in return reminds me of my Toby. And fuck, I love that smile.

“Awesome.” He nods, then looks at Bishop. “You wanna hang out at the hockey house tonight? It’s your turn to help out with Raccoon.”

“Fuck,” Bishop chuckles. “Yeah, why not? I just have to take Lilly back first.”

“You two go.” I wave them off. “I’ll text Bianca to come get me. I have to clean up everything anyways.”

“You sure?” Bishop asks me, brows furrowing in concern.

“I’m sure.” I give him a reassuring smile. “Go. Have fun. Spend some time with your teammates.”

“Yeah, I hardly see you,” Toby teases with a grin, but I see through his act. “You’ve been spending all your free time with this one.” He nods his head in my direction, not making eye contact with me.

Bishop grins, but it’s not a nice one. “Yeah. Just making up for the past two years.”

There is clearly something going on, I just don’t know what. I want to ask but I’m afraid to because if it’s about me, I know I’ll do what I can to take myself out of the equation so I don’t come between their friendship. And well, I don’t want to do that because the idea of losing Bishop so close to losing Toby, guts me.

“Go, go.” I laugh it off. “I’ll be fine.”

“Are you sure?” Bishop asks me again.

“She said she was fine,” Toby says in a tone I can’t quite place.

Bishop’s jaw ticks, and I sigh. “Bye.” I turn and leave because I’m not sure what these two will do if I stay any longer.

Grabbing my headphones out of my hoodie pocket, I put some music on and spend the next hour cleaning up. By the time I’m ready to leave, it’s nine.

I send Bee a text to see if she can come get me, but she sends one back telling me she’s stuck at her house. Her grandparents showed up for a surprise visit and she has been trying to leave for the past two hours with no luck.

Wifey For Lifey: That woman doesn’t stop talking. I love her, I really do. But If I have to hear about her BINGO buddies anymore, I’m going to pull my hair out. Although, the drama with old people be popping.

Biting my lips together, I snort out a laugh. God, I love that girl.

Me: Tell me all about it later. I’ll text Jonas. Good luck and hope you're able to escape soon.

Pulling up Jonas’ number, I call him instead of text. “Hey, Lills. What's up?”

“Any chance you could come get me from the rec center?” I ask, as the sounds of guys laughing in the background fills my ear.

“Yeah, sure. How come one of the guys didn’t take you home before they came here?”

I sigh. “They wanted to hang out, but I still had to clean up. I told them I’d have Bee pick me up, but she’s stuck with her grandparents. Things were getting tense between the three of us, so I sent them away.”

“Ahh, yeah, I could see that.”

“What do you mean?”

“They’ve been throwing backhanded insults at each other all night. I’m not the only one who’s noticed either.”
