“Come on, man, Jonas is a good guy. You need to get the stick out of your ass. He’s on our team now, you’re going to have to learn to get along with him,” Bishop points out from inside their room.

“Doesn’t mean I have to like him,” Toby responds, glaring at my door.

“Okay then.” I tuck a piece of my wet hair behind my ear and slip inside my room.

“Is the guard dog still out there?” Jonas asks with a chuckle. He’s sitting on my bed, his phone in hand.

“Yup.” I go over to my dresser and get out my hair dryer.

“He does know we’re not together, right?”

“Yes.”

“Then why does he still look at me like he wants to punch me in the face?”

I groan. “I don’t know. I’m sure he will get over it in time.”

“I think he likes you. And not like a little sister.” That has me pausing.

“What?” I spin around, and Bianca groans.

“Dude, no, don’t tell her that!”

“What?” Jonas looks between the two of us.

“He doesn’t.” I shake my head. Although the way he used to look at me had me thinking otherwise. But if he loved me as something more, he wouldn’t have so easily pushed me out of his life.

“You sure? Because that man looks at you like you hung the moon. And if anyone else looks your way, it’s like he’s trying to kill them with his death glare.” Jonas chuckles.

“Stop!” Bee throws her pillow at him. “No giving our girl false hope or making her confused. She’s on operation move-the-hell-on.”

“He’s always been like that. He’s just overly protective. We’re each other’s person.” I shrug and turn the hair dryer on, cutting the conversation off.

Guess I’m not the only one who sees it.

Nope, not going down that line of thinking. I’ve already let myself pine over him for too long.

Something he said to me a few months ago flutters back to the front of my mind. Toby was drinking, having a few with our dads, and he ended up hanging out in the back by the pool.

I was coming out of the pool house, when I saw him and stopped in my tracks. I just stood there and watched him. It had been a while since the last time I saw him, and I don’t know, I just wanted that moment.

I guess he could see me watching him because he sat up and said in a drunken slur, “Little sisters don’t look at their brothers that way, Lilly.” Then he got up and walked back into the house, leaving me shocked as hell.

Because that was one of the only few times he’s ever referred to me as his sister. And fuck if that didn’t hurt.

“PEOPLE ARE LOOKING at us,” Bianca whispers as we walk toward the campus cafe.

“I’m aware of that.” But I don’t pay the people around me any mind. I’ve been getting stares and whispers all day. No one has said anything to my face, no rude comments or name calling, so I’ve ignored them. Just as I’m going to do now.

“It doesn’t bother you?”

“Nope.” I smile up at her. “This is Silver Valley, Bee. Give it a few days and something else will happen that has everyone talking.”

“True.” She raises her brows.

“Don’t worry, if someone says shit, I’ll kick their asses,” Jonas says from the other side of Bianca.

“You will not.” She slaps his arm. “That would just draw more attention.”
