I look over at Ryan. It’s not jealousy I see but hurt, which makes his whole body deflate.

“Ex?” I ask, offering him a comforting smile.

“What?” his eyes flick up to mine.

“I know that look. It’s the look of someone who is hurting.”

“Shit.” He lets out a heavy sigh, running a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry, Lilly. I’m fucking up our date.”

“No, you’re not. I’m having a lot of fun. Really, I enjoy hanging out with you.”

“I like hanging out with you too.” He smiles, his mood lightening up a little bit, but I can still see the tension in his shoulders knowing she’s in this building with us.

“But, I’m gonna be honest for the both of us, I don’t think we should be anything more than friends.”

His face drops. “What? Why?”

I raise a brow, grinning wider. “You're still in love with her.”

He opens his mouth to protest but closes it and nods. “I don’t want to be. She hurt me, bad. But we were together for a long time. It’s not something that just goes away overnight, you know?”

“I know better than you think.” I move my pancakes around on my plate. “I’m hung up on someone, too.”

“Toby?” His voice comes out in a low whisper.

My eyes snap up to his. “What? No.” I shake my head, my cheeks heating.

It’s his turn to raise a brow and grin. “I see the way you two look at each other. I’m not sure what the history is there, but there’s something. It’s okay. I won’t tell anyone anything. It’s your business. But I have an idea.”

I swallow, my belly twisting into knots. I hate when anyone knows my feelings for Toby because I never know how they’re going to react, and I really don’t want it getting back to Toby.

“What's your idea?”

“I think the only option is for you to become my new best friend.” He sits back in his chair and shrugs.

“Oh, really?” I giggle, my smile taking up my whole face. “What makes you think that?”

“I’m awesome,” he says with a smirk, and I snort. “And you’re awesome.” I nod in agreement. “So, I think it’s only fair that we team up and be awesome together.”

“I mean, you do have a valid point.” I laugh.

After I take my last bite, he gets the bill and we leave. He drives me home and walks me to my door.

“I had a good time tonight, Lilly. Thanks for being an awesome chick and showing me that not all girls suck.”

“You're welcome.” I laugh, giving him a hug. “Thanks for the movie. I had fun too. Text me, okay? We’ll hang out again soon.”

“I’d like that.” He leans in and kisses my forehead. “See you around, short stuff.” He winks and turns around, heading for the elevator.

“I’m not short.” I call back with a laugh. “I’m fun size.”

He snorts out a laugh, and my cheeks heat as I realize how that sounds. “You're a wild one, Shorty!”

He winks again before the elevator door shuts. Shaking my head with a grin, I go to open my door when I feel someone watching me.

When I turn to look across the hall, I catch the movement just as Toby’s door clicks shut. I stare at it for longer than I should. I want to go over there and ask him why he sent Bishop, because I don’t believe for a second he was there on a date. Bishop doesn’t date and definitely not with some random puck bunny. So he was either there to spy on me or his sister. Maybe both.

Was Toby there too? Did he see me sitting next to Ryan and get jealous? Because the way he was acting towards Ryan before the date, it sure seemed that way.
