“Alright, going to stop you there, smart-ass.” She holds up a hand. “Just treat my girl well, or there will be hell to pay.”

“Sorry that it took me so long,” Lilly apologizes while stepping out the front door. She looks between Rain and me. “Everything okay here?”

“Perfect.” I smile. “Ready to go?”

“Yup.” She gives her mom, Rain, a hug before heading towards the Jeep. I look back over my shoulder as I follow after Lilly, and Rain gives me the I’m watching you gesture.

Yeah, she scares me, alright.

“Today was awesome,” Lilly says as we drive back to school.

“It was.” I grin over at her. “A lot better than hanging out with a bunch of rowdy hockey dudes.”

“Awe, you think I’m better than your teammates?” she gushes playfully, putting a hand over her heart. “I’ll be sure to let each and every one of them know that.”

I chuckle, shaking my head.

I left thinking I was going to just hang out with my best friend, and came back more confused than ever. But one thing I do know is, the crush I worked so hard to push down? Yeah, that shit is coming back ten-fold.

I like my best friend.

I like my sister's best friend.

I like my best friend's girl.

Fuck. My. Life.

Chapter 20

Lillianna

Today, saying my mind was a hot mess would be an understatement.

Ever since last night, all I can think about is that almost-kiss with Bishop. At least, I think he was about to kiss me. Maybe I was just making things up in my head.

But the way he looked at me before Rain interrupted, I can’t get it out of my head.

What does it mean if I wanted him to kiss me? Because at that moment, I wasn’t pulling away, and I don’t think I would have if he followed through.

I’m overthinking this. I don’t like him. He doesn’t like me. We’re only friends. I’m just making up things to feel better about Toby’s rejection.

Speaking of Toby, while Bianca, Jonas, and I walk through campus to grab a coffee, I spot him. He’s sitting at one of the tables with a few of the guys from the team. And Bishop.

Girls are trying to get their attention, running their hands up and down their arms as they chat away. They don’t seem to be paying attention to them as they speak with their teammates.

An uneasy feeling settles over me at the sight. I’ve always hated girls flirting and touching Toby, that's nothing new. But why do I not only hate the blonde next to Toby, but also the redhead next to Bishop?

“Girl, are you even paying attention?” my best friend asks, crossing her arms.

“What? Sorry.” I blink over at her and realize it’s our turn in line to order.

“Order your drink before I get you the nastiest thing on the menu for ignoring me,” she huffs.

My cheeks heat as I look at the cute barista, who's giving me a small grin. “Ah, I’ll have a large caramel frappuccino with whipped cream and toffee pieces on top, please.”

He nods, types in my order, and tells me my total. I pay and turn to my best friend.

“I don’t know why they keep trying,” Bianca comments.
