“Are you alright?” Darian’s voice is barely above a whisper, and my attention immediately shifts toward him.

Me?

The man was beaten to all hell, and he’s worried about me?

“You’re seriously asking me that?” My voice trembles with frustration and I take a deep breath.

Darian nods, his hair shifting loosely with the movement. “You’re right. I shouldn’t have. I got caught, I’m sorry.”

My chest constricts, and I raise my hand, “Stop”

Darian pauses, locking eyes with me.

I can’t help but take in the sight of his battered face. His split lip and the bruises trailing down his neck and arms send a fresh wave of anger through me.

It takes a conscious effort not to consider burning this fucking building to the ground with everyone but Darian in it.

“I am fine. What did they do to you?” I ask but Darian shakes his head.

“That doesn’t matter.” he says, glancing to the door, “They’re trying to plant evidence to get me convicted. It seems there’s someone pulling strings behind this, someone who doesn’t want me to be free,” he says, his jaw feathering.

Caspian.

I pull out my phone and dial, he answers on the first ring.

“Lara. Get everything you need?” Darian’s eyes narrow at his brother’s voice.

“Cut the shit, Caspian.” I seethe.

There’s been enough lies and games.

I’m fucking done.

There is a brief pause on the other end of the line.

“What’s wrong?” Caspian’s voice remains steady, devoid of his usual cocky amusement, and I can’t decide if this newfound seriousness is preferable or not.

“Darian needs to get out of here, today.” I say with a low tone, desperation leeching into my words.

“No-can-do, little one. He needs to await trial before he can leave. That’s what happens when you evade the police,” Caspian dismisses my plea, and frustration surges through my veins.

I lower my voice, moving to the far side of the room, away from the door, in case the guard arrives with the food I requested earlier.

“Caspian, if you do not get him out of here and release Tammy, I’m done. No more finding these fucking amulets. You can hunt them down your damn self and these ones will sink with me to the bottom of the fucking Atlantic.”

Darian’s eyes widen like saucers as he listens to my words, his gaze shifting between me and the phone as if he hardly recognizes me.

I suppose in some sense he might not.

“Stop playing, Lara,” Caspian’s voice remains flat on the other line, but there’s a flicker of uncertainty in his tone that emboldens me.

I channel my anger into the words I speak, letting the venom seep from my lips.

“Listen to my voice and tell me if I’m fucking playing Caspian. I’m done. Either you put a stop to this little game you’re playing to take your brother out of the equation or your entire plan to get back home goes to shit right before your eyes.”

There’s a moment of silence on the line, and I wonder if I’ve pushed him too far. Then Caspian’s cold tone breaks through the speaker.

“Consider it done. He’ll be released tonight.”
