Caspian’s command for that was chilling, to say the least.

Engrossed in putting away the dishes, my hands jerk involuntarily when a sudden knock on the door startles me.

The glass I hold slips from my grasp, crashing against the floor and shattering. A mix of hope floods my thoughts at the possibility that it could be Darian returning home.

Caspian walks to the door with a slight limp as he checks the peephole.

He opens the door revealing a woman with sleek black hair and dark voids for eyes standing in the doorway. Her gaze shifts between Caspian and me, and I can’t help but feel a chill run downmy spine as her eyes rake down my body.

Val’s growl reverberates from the couch, his fur standing on end. Taking his warning, I find my voice, “I don’t want anyone else in here, Caspian. It’s already challenging enough having you around.”

His lips curl into a smirk, and he tilts his head in acknowledgment. “Very well. I’ll text you the location we’ll be heading to tomorrow evening.”

“Tomorrow evening?!” I snap.

He cocks his head and sighs with annoyance, his asshole demeanor fully returned. “Yes, tomorrow evening. I need time to plan and gather my people, who are currently scattered across the country. Unless you want to go in half-cocked and risk getting captured as well?” His piercing gaze makes me swallow, and I nod reluctantly.

“Very well, now that we have that settled. I’ll be in touch,” he remarks with a casual wave over his shoulder as he limps out of the door. I find myself once again locking eyes with the woman standing in the doorway.

She looks at me as if I’m delivering a meal she’s been eagerly waiting for, her black eyes gleaming with anticipation. It sends a shiver down my spine, and I instinctively reach for the dagger on the counter.

“I’ll be seeing you soon, vrenlon dyrtia” She grins, a wicked amusement dancing in her eyes, before allowing the door to slide shut.

I exhale the breath I’ve been holding and shake my head, trying to process the whirlwind of information from the past few hours.

I need a drink.

Chapter 42

The following hours drift by in a haze. I clean the kitchen, take a much-needed shower, and put on fresh clothes.

I retreat to Darian’s bed for a nap, and when Val wakes me up from a nightmare, I stumble into the kitchen to prepare breakfast.

I find myself crawling back to the familiar embrace of Darian’s bed, longing to feel his presence in some way and I linger there for hours. I’m lost in my thoughts until Val interrupts by tugging at the blankets with an attitude and I swat at him to stop.

Impatience gnaws at me as I wait for Caspian’s text with the location. Each passing minute feels like an eternity, and my mind races with anticipation and anxiety. I check my phone repeatedly to no avail.

The waiting game is agonizing, and I find myself growing restless, yearning for some semblance of direction.

As I picture the potential horrors Darian may be facing, I know I can’t afford to waste any more time. Propelling myself out of bed and into the bathroom, I gather the necessary supplies for a first aid kit to bring with us.

Bandages, antiseptic, and other medical essentials find their place in my trembling hands. As I organize the kit, my thoughts are consumed by Darian, but there’s one sentence I repeat over and over as if to will it into existence.

He will be alive.

Carefully selecting the necessary supplies, I gather enough materials to address a range of injuries, from burns to cuts and even suturing items. Including two adrenaline shots, hydrogen peroxidealong with various other items that could prove useful in unforeseen scenarios.

With the kit organized, I place it into the small bag I’ll be bringing with me.

The kitchen clock reads 10 PM as I’m about to drop the backpack by the front door. My phone chimes from the bedroom, breaking the silence and with a racing heart, I rush to retrieve it.

Caspian:0293 Glenridge Drive, be there within the next hour and get into position. Enter from the servant’s door on the east side of the property, it will have low visibility and low traffic. It will be clear once we move in from the north, that will be your queue to go.

Caspian:And Lara, make sure you bring the dagger since you know how to use it.

I scoff.

Lara:Don’t worry. Your precious amulet locator doesn’t plan to die today.
