Relief coats every inch of my body once the cool of the metal and glass is in my palm. My gaze drops, curious by the detailed depiction of a majestic three-headed dog at its center I wonder what the images inside mean as I carefully clasp it alongside the others on my necklace.

The rest of the day unfolds in a surprisingly normal manner as we continue exploring the various kiosks and the vibrant energy of the convention.

We indulge in snacks along the way as we people watch, pointing out fun costumes and enjoy thethrill of the event.

Chapter 50

Caspian

I sit at my desk in the confines of my study fully engrossed in my thoughts as a familiar buzz rings out from my pocket.

It’s been hours since Lara and Darian were seen at the convention. I can only assume that they have successfully retrieved the key.

Yet, as my focus settles on the last remaining pieces of the puzzle, an undeniable weight rests upon my shoulders.

My gut twists knowing we’re near the finish line.

There is a lingering issue casting a long shadow over my thoughts and has given me pause for days.

The museum break-in that resulted in the disappearance of the final key, recovering it would demand another sacrifice. That knowledge gnaws at my gut with a disquieting unease.

Blair’s dismissive fucking attitude whenever I broach the subject eats at the corners of my mind.

It is not just her aloofness that troubles me. It is the underlying tension that has permeated our interactions since the incident involving Tamara’s release from the warehouse weeks ago.

There is a growing sense of discord.

This development deepens my paranoia, leading me to question the integrity of those within our inner circle. Furthering my suspicion that Blair, or someone closely associated with our trusted group, is being dishonest.

Considering the circumstances surrounding the keys, it’s evident that the knowledge of them extends beyond our immediate circle.

Hell, Cain knew about the keys because I foolishly told him, he just didn’t know they were amulets.

I’m certain others, for whatever reason, may be pursuing them.

Yet, when I consider the limited number of individuals aware of the amulets’ existence—myself, Blair, my brother, and Lara—it becomes increasingly clear that the answers lie within our own ranks.

I had yet to disclose the key’s location to Lara and Darian.

This narrows the pool of individuals who could be responsible for the theft even further.

Checking my phone, I notice a message from Blair, and a frown creases on my brow.

It has been some time since we last communicated, once I completed my arduous sixty-seven-hour play session with Dolly, finally putting an end to her suffering.

Blair:Need your help in the garage, have cargo.

I rise from my desk, stretching my limbs to alleviate the stiffness that has settled after hours of work. Exiting the study, I move through the hushed corridors of the house, my footsteps the only sound breaking the silence.

With a push, the heavy garage door swings open, where stacks of nondescript boxes clutter the space as they always have. Confused by the lack of the cargo, I frown, turning my head to scan the area before darkness engulfs me.

As consciousness returns my mind is fogged and hazy.

I become aware of my body resting on a bed as I sit up and reach for the blindfold covering my eyes. As it slips off, my gaze sweeps across the room, and confusion washes over me.

I’m in my bedroom?
