It’s the same woman from the apartment the night I stabbed Caspian.

Fear grips me, holding me in place as I realize the danger I’m in.

“I’m so glad you were able to make it, vrenlon dyrtia,” she says, her black eyes darting around before a sinister grin spreads across her face. “I’m pleased you followed my instructions.”

I square my shoulders, trying to muster confidence that I don’t have. “Release them,” I demand, and the woman’s eyes narrow.

She clicks her tongue and shakes her head mockingly. “I’m afraid I cannot grant your request just yet. If you comply, however, they will remain unharmed.”

Her eyes flash with a mix of excitement and satisfaction as I take a cautious step closer.

My brows pinch together as a familiar sensation in my body halts me in place, and my hand instinctively goes to my abdomen, feeling an inexplicable pull.

Here?

The woman’s gaze tracks my movement like a predator stalking her prey and her grin widens, revealing gleaming white teeth.

She reaches into her pocket, producing an amulet as she holds it between us, “Ah, yes. I believe this is something of great interest to you. I took the liberty of retrieving it from that dusty old museum.”

My eyes widen in disbelief.

“That was you? Why would you steal the amulet? What do you want?” My voice gets stronger as my fear and confusion melt into frustration.

She throws her head back and lets out a chilling cackle.

“Oh, vrenlon dyrtia, our desires align. I want the same thing as you. My purpose is to see that magic returns, and you are the key to making it happen,” she declares with a wicked gleam in her eyes.

“What is vrenlon dyrtia? Why do you keep saying that?” I demand, grinding my teeth together.

There’s the anger.

Her grin widens, as if she’s excited to educate me.

“Have you never been told the prophecy? My, my. Vrenlon dyrtia still has so much to learn but so little time.” she says, taking a step closer.

The pull inside me intensifies, and I shift to maintain my balance.

Her smile widens, and she begins to recite words that flow effortlessly from her lips, each sending shivers down my spine.

“Born of sun and moon, will reveal the keys.

To unlock source’s power, once sealed away.

But darkness lurks, seeking to deceive.

And one must sacrifice for magic to be freed.”

She takes another step closer, and I instinctively move a pace back, but a sudden jolt of pain tremors its way through my chest and core.

Panic coats my veins when I realize I won’t be able to run from her if she has the amulet.

“Beware the one who pulls the strings,

A deceiver with blood magic’s control

For the banished seeks to return

With a thirst for power, his heart a black hole.”
