I shudder as she takes another step, further closing the short distance between us, and my legs begin to quiver beneath me.

“In the water where realms collide,

Her body will break the final seal.

Great sacrifice to unleash great power,

But darkness rises, with essence it shall steal.”

My knees buckle under her final step, and she seizes my hair, forcefully dragging me behind her. The relentless pull of the amulet renders my resistance useless as we wade deeper into the lake, the water rising to our waists.

“Only she alone can save their fate,

And with magic’s return, a new dawn awaits.

A future world of wonder, free from fear,

But with rampant darkness, the future’s unclear.”

Agony forces a cry from my lips as she rips the chain from my neck, holding the amulets before her with a manic smile on her face.

My arms brace against my trembling thighs as I struggle to maintain my balance, panting heavily as horror coats my veins. I steal a quick glance at my friends, still safely unconscious on the shore.

At least her attention is fixed on the amulets.

“I will accomplish what Caspian failed to do. I will succeed in breaking the seal and restoring things to the way they were long ago,” she declares, her words echoing in my ears.

Time seems to slow down as she pulls her arm back and thrusts the blade through one of the amulets. The glass shatters, releasing the shimmering liquid contents into the lake.

A violent tremor rips through me and the water around me pulsates with energy.

She shatters another amulet and I gasp for air, feeling as if the very oxygen has been sucked from my lungs.

With each successive strike she smashes the remaining amulets, and I fight to stay standing, clinging to every ounce of strength I have.

If I can just hold on until she’s done with the last one, I may have a chance to escape. But as the knife pierces through the final amulet, the one with a stunning sun disk at its center, I can no longer fight the force dragging me down.

My legs give way, and I collapse into the water onto my knees, the chaotic lake rising over my ears and threatening to pull me under. Gasping for breath, I desperately keep my face upturned to avoid drowning.

After she drops the last shattered piece into the water, she turns toward me, her grin stretching from ear to ear.

“Vrenlon dyrtia, in my native language of ancient Servilian, means chosen daughter. You see, you are the one born of the sun and moon, of day and night. Born of the gods themselves. You are the key, the one destined to break the final seal. Your life essence, the blood within your body, shall be the offering that I will deliver.”

Her words echo in the air, sending chills down my spine.

She tilts her head back and laughs maniacally as she slices my wrist with her dagger, quickly bringing it to her lips and greedily drinking my blood.

I’m paralyzed. Unable to move or make a sound as I feel the life force draining from my veins.

My strength slowly wanes, and I’m uncertain how long she continues to drink or how much of my blood she consumes.

Eventually, she withdraws, a stream of deep crimson staining her chin and neck, leaving me weakened and on the brink of unconsciousness.

My thoughts turn to Darian, the sense of safety and protection I felt in his arms floods my memories.

I think of Val, the subtle twitch of his ears whenever I asked him a question, and the playful humor in his eyes during our banter with Darian. I think of how both of them consistently showed up to protect and guard me.

To find me when all hope seemed lost.
