“No one believed that dumb bitch, but surprise surprise, the prophecy is real. You will be the one to break it becauseyou,” He points his index finger through the air at me, “You are the key.”

What? This guy is certifiable. It would be just my luck to attract this psycho.

“What prophecy? I’m a scientist, not an inanimate object.” My voice cracks and I know my efforts to delay won’t last much longer.

His grin widens, but he doesn’t respond to my question. A faint howl sounds off in the distance which captures his attention, and the distraction is enough of an opening for me.

I drop everything and dart to the right, launching myself between two trees before leaping over a fallen log covered in moss. Curses are thrown behind me, and I can hear the quick thud of his boots against the forest floor as he sprints after me.

I’m not sure how long I’m flying through the woods, going as fast as my legs can carry me, but my chest is burning. I’m a distance runner, not a short circuit sprinter. I’ve stupidly exerted too much energy but the adrenaline surging through my veins doesn’t give me any room to falter.

I can hear him gaining on me, his ragged breaths compete with mine as we thunder through the trees in a twisted game of cat and mouse.

Landing on the ground after a leap over a high log, I chance a quick look behind me and nearly stumble when he’s nowhere to be seen there. I take a few more long strides, scanning the empty forest for any sign of him.

Just as I’m about to continue running, an arm suddenly wraps around my waist, pulling me back into a broad chest as if I’m a rag doll, and a large hand clamps over my mouth.

No. This can’t be happening.

How did he end up in front of me?

Panic surges through me as I feel a pinch in my neck and a cry escapes my lips, muffled by the hand over it.

As dizziness consumes me in my frantic state and I thrash around, with each movement the world spins out of control as I desperately try to break free. The hand over my mouth loosens and I gasp for air, taking in a deep breath that seems to barely satisfy my starving lungs as my limbs grow heavy and numb.

The stranger supports my body, holding me upright as I slump forward, the forest floor coming into view as my neck can no longer keep the weight of my head up. My mind races as my heart rate slows and soon after the darkness begins to close in at the corners of my vision, everything goes black.

Chapter 9

Darian

Lifting her limp body over my shoulder, I glance around for any sign of the asshole chasing her. He’s nowhere to be found which isn’t surprising. The moment he noticed me approaching from the side, he disappeared behind a tree.

The drug was a decent concentration, and she should be out for at least an hour. Plenty of time to get her to the safe house and away from prying eyes while I get the information I need.

I want to say I’ll start slow and ease her into questioning, but I doubt we have the luxury of time. If one hunter has found her, I’m certain others will.

I need to know what she has that they want, otherwise she’s as good as dead.

Adjusting her on my shoulder, I’m not entirely surprised at how light she is. She has considerable muscle for how lean she is, which makes sense since she’s a runner, and I’d swear most of her weight comes from her chest and ass. Carrying her takes less than half a thought, and it’s not long before we get to the truck as I place her in the passenger seat, her head dips forward as I lean in to buckle her seatbelt.

Her white hair billows into my face as a breeze passes through, and I inhale a deep breath of her scent. Even after running for who knows how long, she smells like a blend of lavender, honey and vanilla. It’s so intoxicating that I find myself hesitating, sucking in a final deep breath before prying my body from hers.

Back in the driver’s seat, I throw it in drive and take off down the road. Nervously glancing toward the passenger side every few minutes as her head nods with each bump. Her features are completely relaxed and peaceful, but I’d be a fool to think she’ll remain this way when she wakes up.

The thought of her becoming frantic and afraid when she comes to, has me white knuckling the steering wheel.

I’m fucking anxious.

For years since I found out she was someone the hunters were after, I’ve hidden in the shadows and tracked her from a distance. I knew the day would come where we’d meet, but I hoped it wouldn’t be like this.

Putting the truck into park, I grimace.

The conditions of us meeting are, unappealing at best.

She’s going to lose her damn mind. I’ll be lucky to get any information from her at all.

I exit the truck and move to her side, careful not to jostle her too much as I unbuckle the seatbelt, and hoist her over my shoulder, contemplating where to put her as I carry her into the building.
