Lara:Hey you guys, everything's fine. Crazy few days. I’ll catch you up later. Just know I’m alive and ok.

Candace is instantly typing.

Candace:That’s totally what a serial killer would say to throw off time of death. Say something only Lara would know or else I’m calling the police!

I roll my eyes and sigh, though she’s not wrong. I’d totally assume the same.

Caspian leans back against the wall with his hands in his pockets, watching with amusement as I flip the camera on and my side table light, I hold out my phone and press record.

“Candace, I appreciate the concern but it’s really me, not a serial killer with my phone pretending to be me.” As I finish my sentence, Caspian laughs quietly from the theatrics of it.

I click send and shoot him a look. “It’s a valid concern, I would worry too if someone went MIA for days and suddenly sent a ‘Hey guys, I’m alive’ text. That kind of text screams ‘I’m not really alive, just throwing you off my killer’s trail’.”

He laughs harder, my phone chimes and I glance down.

Candace:Thank god you’re okay. Who was laughing in the background of the video?

Candace:Lara, is there someone there with you?

Candace:Oh my god, it’s the serial killer.

Candace:LARA BLINK TWICE IF YOU NEED HELP.

Lara:It’s a long story but no, not a serial killer.

I suppose he did admit that he has killed many people.

I snort and look up at Caspian. My cheeks flush when I find his eyes on me and I opt to let him in on the inside joke.

“They heard your laugh in the video right at the end and asked if the serial killer was there with me. I said you weren’t, but I suppose in essence you are, given what you said about having killed many people.”

Caspian’s lips twitch before his gaze falls to my wrists and his face hardens, becoming once again frustratingly unreadable. “They don’t have to worry about him anymore. The wolf solved that problem.”

I nod and open my phone again.

Candace:Okay, I believe you, for now. Get some sleep, we can catch up later.

I close those messages and wince as I open Tammy’s conversation.

Lara:Hey girl, sorry the past few days I’ve been MIA. Lost my phone and then wandered in the wilderness. Everything is good now though. Love ya.

The messages deliver but aren’t instantly read. It’s super early on the west coast. She’s probably asleep.

I rub my palms to my eyes and sigh, ignoring the pain in my wrists. “Thank goodness that’s done.”

“Yep, now I can really kill you and no one will suspect me” My head jerks toward him as a grin creeps across his face.

I narrow my eyes at him and glare at him through slits. “No one would have suspected you, anyways, Mystery Man.”

“Even better.” The mischievous look he gives me makes me roll my eyes sarcastically.

Caspian pushes himself off the wall, walking toward the bedand my heart thuds loudly in my chest. He reaches to the side table and grabs the glass from earlier before heading out of the room with a dismissive wave and flicking the light off.

“Get some sleep, Lara.”

Grumbling as I roll over, I wrap an arm around Dan’s neck and burying my face in his fur with a deepcontented sigh.
