“I’ll get a steak to go, and some fries.”

They perk forward.

“Medium rare?” His voice is dripping with amusement and Dan’s ears twitch but stay pointed in front of him. He laughs under his breath and exits the vehicle.

“I’ll get a second steak for you.” I mutter quietly to Dan, and he leans forward to nuzzle my arm with his ears still perked.

My passenger door opens, and I whirl to see Caspian grinning at me as if he knows I promised our canine friend a second serving.

I flush and step out of the truck, following Caspian inside.

We’re seated at a quiet table toward the back of the building. As we sit down I note that it’s close to an exit and another set of doors to the kitchen.

Good choice, Mystery man. Real smart.

A waitress comes to the table with two waters and menus, setting one of each in front of us. “Good evening, what can I get you started with?” She leans in toward him, her leg pressed against his thigh where he sits.

White-hot jealousy ravages through me and I have to fiddle with my straw to calm myself. I look up at Caspian as I plop it into my glass.

He glances at me and back to her. “We’ll each get a steak, medium rare, mashed potatoes on the side, bearnaise sauce and truffle aioli on the side. A side of onion rings as well. We’ll get two steaks to go, medium rare.”

The waitress blinks at him and hurriedly writes down the order. “Anything else to drink?”

“Water is fine for me.” I interject.

Caspian mumbles the same, and she scurries off toward the kitchen.

“Do people do that often to you?” He raises a brow, waiting for me to clarify. “Do they-” My face burns with embarrassment and I think twice about my question. “Nevermind, I don’t know what I’m saying.”

He laughs and leans back in his chair, stretching out his legs. His knee brushes my leg and my body jolts, but he doesn’t pull it away.

It’s still firmly pressed against my leg as the waitress returns with our onion rings, two plates and sets of silverware, she gives us a brief smile and disappears into the kitchen again.

I glance around the pub, my nerves rattling as I search for any indication someone is looking for us. I try and fail to locate any mismatched eyes in the room. Everyone seems to be drinking and eating happily, in their own worlds without any care.

“My brother won’t look for us here. What he did today was likely nothing more than a scare tactic. He knows we can find the amulets and he knows you are his only way to do that. I doubt he even knows what they look like.”

What did he say to you in the forest?

Did he say what he wanted?

Darian’s voice echoes inside of my mind.

I look at him and lean back in my seat, tilting my head to study him.

His jawline has stubble on it, and he has a few loose strands of black hair that are long enough to touch his cheeks. I shift in place and my leg rubs slightly against his, I watch as he freezes and a light flush creeps up his own neck.

Good to know he’s not entirely unaffected. At least I’m not alone in that aspect then.

“I really would rather not discuss anything to do with your brother or men who want to do abhorrent things to me right now, Caspian.”

Emotion flickers across his face and he nods, “You’re right. What do you want to talk about, then?”

“You.”

Caspian’s eyes flash for a moment as he chuckles, dragging a hand through his hair, “Me? Or the Netflix show about the guy who’s a stalker?”

I level him with a deadpan look, “Funny.”
