Men. No appreciation for variation.

I think back to Tammy and her two suitcases she hauled into my front room for one night of dancing and snort quietly before using my towel to dry my hair. I begin to brush my teeth when I realize I haven’t heard back from Tammy still.

A frown creeps across my face, unease sinking deep in my gut.

I spit my toothpaste out, rinse my brush and wipe off my mouth before hurrying into the bedroom to grab my phone.

I’m only three steps toward the bed when I freeze, seeing Caspian standing on the other side of the room with Dan curled on the bed.

As the cool air caresses my skin, I instinctively cover myself with my hands to try to preserve some semblance of modesty.

Caspian’s eyes quickly avert, Dan simply stares at me unblinking.

Pervert. Remind me to punch him when he’s no longer a dog.

I whip back to the bathroom and grab my towel to wrap myself before returning to the main room, my heart thundering in my chest.

“To what do I owe this pleasure?” My voice cracks and I swallow loudly.

“We. I. Well, I wanted to see if you had everything you needed and Dan should sleep in here. My home is secure but just in case..” Caspian’s eyes burn into my soul while he speaks, his voice thick as he trails off.

I nod, “I have nearly everything I can think of. Any chance we can grab more of my clothes from the house? Pajamas, bras and underwear, maybe?”

Caspian blinks and then laughs while scratching his head, “I knew I was forgetting something. We can go tomorrow when it’s daylight out. Dan will run ahead of us once we get onto the last roadthere. Stick close to me while we get what you need, and we’ll bring it back here.”

Walking to the side table to grab my phone, I nod in agreement and unlock it to look at Tammy’s conversation.

No new messages. I frown.

“What is it?” I look up at Caspian, his head is cocked to the side as he studies me.

“When we returned to my house after everything happened, I had an absurd number of missed messages and calls. I responded to Tammy but haven’t heard back from her. She hasn’t even read my messages which is unlike her.” I frown as I look at him before continuing, “It’s not uncommon for her to go a few hours without responding because of the time difference along the west coast from here but, to go days? My gut is telling me something isn’t right, Caspian.”

He crosses his arms over his chest, reaches up and rubs his thumb along his jawline.

“So we’ll look for her then.” He says while nodding slightly.

A wave of shock and relief washes over me and I gape at him, “You’d help me?”

He gives me a hint of a smile, “She’s important to you, so it goes without questioning that I would help. She seems like a fierce friend.”

My chest swells with relief as I nod.

“Alright, I’ll need you to send me her address, some pictures of her, and send me screenshots of the messages between you two so I can see when she stopped responding.”

I open my phone and start sending everything to Caspian, his cell chimes, and he chuckles as he flips through the pictures and screenshots.

He makes his way to the door, glancing back at me, “If you wake up before me, help yourself to anything in the kitchen. Once we eat, we can head over to the house.”

I nod as he exits the room and I open my phone to my group chat.

Lara:I’m not going to be in tomorrow. Need to handle some stuff so don’t freak out when I’m not in.

The message sends and instantly shows read.

Candace:Use condoms!

I roll my eyes and snort.
