The drive to Caspian’s is different during the day. The worn down road has beautiful oak and birch trees, and a small river on one side, barely visible through the thick underbrush filled with wildlife. As we drive down the path, we see deer eating, rabbits darting from one bush to another and birds fluttering around the canopy.

“You sure you’re not like a disney prince or something?” I ask, smirking as I turn to glance at Caspian.

“Yeah, I’m sure.” The way his expression hardens keeps me from making any further Disney jokes, but I store away the information for later. There’s something about Caspian’s past that seems to haunt him and I plan to find out what that is.

The truck pulls out beyond the forest line and I gape at the house. It’s huge. It’s like a mini mansion.

It’s modern looking. It’s painted white with lots of windows that reflect a mirror image of the surrounding area. The roof has solar panels on it, and it appears to have a three-car garage.

“The windows are bulletproof. There’s cameras everywhere excluding the bathrooms. There’s a pool in the backyard but it’s only usable during the warmer months and there’s a hot tub as well.”

I’m fully slack jawed now, and he chuckles before putting the truck in park.

As we walk up to the house, I hear Caspian’s phone chime from the security system, but mine doesn’t. He glances over and must see the unspoken question on my face, “I have the same security system in each room and outside, so the same notifications.”

Oh god, there’s a camera in the bedroom.

My eyes widen as I look at him.

“So last night-” I start to ask but Caspian cuts me off.

“Was on camera, yes.” He nods once, his emerald eyes searching my face.

“Was it…” I can’t finish my question.

Thankfully, Caspian has no such hesitations,“Recorded?”

I nod.

He cocks his head to the side and eyes me, “Did you want it to be?”

I rear back and I blink at him, his question catching me off guard.

Do I wish it was recorded?

What would I do if it was?

Would I want to watch it?

Would I care if he did?

Caspian chuckles as if he can read my influx of questionable thoughts, and I shake my head as I trail behind him to the door.

Following him inside, he turns to me after taking off his shoes. “Let’s get a small pack of stuff, just enough for a night or two and we’ll drive to a town nearby where Tammy could be staying and see if we can pick up a trail.”

I nod, heading to the bedroom with my suitcase while Caspian hauls my duffle bag along behind me. I do just that and pack light, carrying my bag into the main living area, setting it down on the coffee table in the center and I wait.

Caspian comes in a little while later with a bag of his own. He strides across the room to where I stand, the movement so deliberate that my heart pounds in my chest as he maintains eye contact while stalking toward me.

As he stands before me, my pulse flutters and I swallow thickly. Memories of his lips against mine come to the forefront of my mind as I clear my throat and Caspian gives me a knowing smirk.

He leans down to wrap his fingers around the strap of my bag, pulling it alongside his own with a slight chuckle before turning and waving for me to follow him.

“Ass,” I mumble as I walk, and he barks a laugh.

We drive to a small town not far from the airport. It has a low population of people, but there’s a little low-key motel and a couple rental properties that are far away from prying eyes. Pulling in to the parking lot, we get out with our bags in hand and go to the front desk to check in.

I scan the surrounding area and buildings, the windows, the vehicles nearby and anyone coming or going. I’m partially keeping an eye out for Tammy, and the other part of me is watching for Darian.
