As we enter the room, Rose is digging into a piece of cake, smearing chocolate icing across her cheek as she stuffs the spoon inher mouth. May is taking huge gulps from a cup of milk, with half a slice of cake in front of her.

Stacey turns to us and clasps her hands together with a bright smile that is genuine. “Well! If it isn’t our friends Caspian and Lara! Did you come for cake too?”

Caspian chuckles and shakes his head, “Sorry Stacey, watching my figure.”

I snort and the image of him nearly unhinging his jaw like a snake while shoving a burger down his throat flickers through my mind.

His eyes flash to mine, narrowing as if he knows what I’m thinking.

Stacey looks at me next, and I wave my hands across my body, shaking my head. “No thank you, I’m still full from my lunch.”

Caspian laughs quietly, “We were just hoping to see them before we leave, actually. We should be getting back.” he says, squeezing my hand gently before releasing it.

Rose and May stop what they’re doing and jump off their seats. I crouch down as they sprint the few small steps, and hug me tightly.

I whisper softly, wrapping an arm around each of them, “You will be so happy here. Stacey and Dylan are good people. They will have my number and if you ever want to talk, just call me alright? If you guys want me to come visit, just tell me and I will be here.”

I pull my head back to look at them as they nod and though there are tears in their eyes, none fall.

That alone sends relief through my body, reassuring me that I’m making the right choice as both girls walk to Caspian, hugging him from either side and my chest swells. He ruffles their hair, and they make angry noises before scurrying back to sit and finish their cake.

Lionel and Dylan come in from the other side of the room and with amusement on their faces as they watch the girls dig in.

“Well, shall we get going?” Lionel turns to us and we both nod. Though it’s only been a few hours, exhaustion has set deep into my bones and I can’t wait to relax in the motel after a long, hot shower.

The drive back to the motel is quick, and we’re soon stepping in the door to the room. I yawn as I tear open the drawer and grab some pajamas from my bag, hurry into the washroom and shower.

Once clean, I wrap my hair in a towel and pull on my pajamas. As I walk out, Caspian moves past me to take his own shower and I plop onto one of the beds with a satisfied sigh.

My eyelids get heavier as I blink, and finally they stay closed. It feels like mere seconds later the shower turns off and Caspian’s footsteps echo through the room before the bed dips and my eyes snap open.

“What are you doing?” My voice is thick with exhaustion, but it still manages to sound like a squeak.

“Dan isn’t here and you’re going to have nightmares whether you admit it or not. This is better than people calling the police if you start screaming. This way, I can wake you up before you get to that point. Now get some rest.”

His voice is so matter-of-fact, and damn him, but I’m too tired to argue so I grumble and turn over. He laughs quietly under his breath as he flicks the light off on the side table, before settling into bed.

I slowly rouse from sleep and my limbs feel heavy as I lay on my stomach. I’m sprawled with the sheets twisting around my legs, a thick blanket on top me and Dan is flattened against my back.

Bare skin touching my legs and the warm breath feathering over my hair snags my attention the events of last night replay in my mind.

My heart stutters as I realize that Caspian is half laying on me, his legs intertwined with mine.

My entire body flushes with heat, and my mind goes completely blank.

Do I move? Do I wait until he wakes up? What if he’s already awake?

My pulse thunders as I shift slightly, hoping that I can slip from the bed without being noticed.

My hopes are smothered as Caspian’s muscular arm around my waist tightens, and he drags me closer into him, bringing my back flush to his front.

My body tenses at the movement and there’s a long moment before I feel it.

The length of him throbs against my back and my breath gets caught in my lungs. It pulsates again and my heart hammers within my chest, threatening to crawl out my throat.

It wouldn’t take much for me to roll on top of him and...

Nope, not going there.
