“Breathe, Lara.” Caspian’s sleep laden voice is deeper than usual, and I feel my pussy clench.

Blowing out a breath I hear him chuckle behind me, “Ass.” My voice cracks and I wince.

“Mmm. Yours is nice.” he mumbles, and I decide to haul myself out of bed before my traitorous body makes any decisions for me.

My legs get caught in the sheets as I struggle to clamber out of bed, which only prompts a hearty laugh from Caspian. I finally push to my feet, twisting to look at him with exasperation.

His half lidded eyes peek at me from where his face still rests against the pillows, as if he was hardly bothered by me launching from the bed.

He’s smirking and I shoot him a glare, “I’m sleeping in-”

Caspian cuts me off abruptly, “My bed tonight, or whatever bed I sleep in, you will too.”

“What? Why do I not get my own bed?” My voice squeaks.

“You didn’t have a nightmare last night. I don’t even think you dreamed.”

I blink at him, “I was exhausted, clearly.” I manage to say coolly, placing my hands on my hips.

His eyes track the movement as he rolls to the side, leaning on one arm.

From this angle, the corded muscles of his abdomen are on display, tensing as he moves.

“You also are in a strange place after helping two little girls out of situations no doubt similar to what you went through. You should have had a nightmare last night, Lara. You and I both know it.”

I do, doesn’t mean I’ll admit it.

I huff and move to the washroom, clenching my thighs as the wetness between them threatens to expose me.

Traitorous fucking pussy.

By the time I come out, Caspian’s pulling his shoes on, glancing at me with a knowing smirk. I glare daggers at him and stalk to my bag, grabbing my clothes out and setting them on the bed.

Two can play at this game.

Facing him as I tear off my pajamas, his eyes widen as our gaze locks, and I don’t miss the heat in his expression. I turn away, making a point to pull my pants on slowly, bending at the hip to pick them up, stretching with emphasis and I hear him choke a cough.

Fighting a smile, I put my pajamas into the bag and set thebag next to Caspian’s. “So, where to, now?”

Caspian’s quiet for a moment, then pulls out his phone and scrolls around on what I’m guessing is a map. “Tammy’s cell is still pinging from the coast. So it’s safe to assume it hasn’t left, but that leaves us with one option, and that’s to search nearby towns here and then lastly, to search the city she lives on the coast.” he says, pointing on his phone at two different places before continuing, “I think we could go here, next” His finger lands on a town on the screen that doesn’t look to be far from us, “And we can search in somewhat of a circle until we round back to where we started unless we get a hit from her cards or phone.”

I take a deep breath, “Okay. Let’s go find her.”

Chapter 23

We drive to the next town which is somewhat livelier.

There is a clear hustle and bustle through the streets with people stopping to chat with one another. It’s not long until we turn off the main road into the driveway of a rental property.

Pulling the bag over my shoulder, I follow Caspian in the house. He inputs a PIN into his phone, a beep sounds out, and he pushes the door open, peering around before he turns to me, inclining his head toward the hallway, “Alright, put your stuff into the bedroom and let’s go explore.”

Driving through the streets, I keep a lookout for Tammy’s green eyes and prominent facial features. After a while with no sight of her, we drive circles around the miniature city before slowly make our way into what would be considered ‘downtown’.

Traffic congestion is heavy, and it’s a struggle just to find a place to park. There seems to be some sort of event happening that has local police cruisers blocking off streets with their lights on. There are tents set up along either side of the road and people walking from one vendor to another.

“A farmer’s market.” I breathe with excitement as we finally pull into an empty spot before walking through the streets at a slow pace on foot, scanning the crowd.

Caspian’s fingers gently wrap around my elbow, “Let’s grab something from one of these vendors and we can watch while we get breakfast.”
