Caspian’s eyes flick from me to the vendor employee and then light up, “Excuse me, can we see those necklaces there?” He asks, while pointing to the amulets.

She looks up quickly like she was caught doing something she shouldn’t and rushes, “Yes, of course. One moment.”

She pulls them off the wall and sets them on the counter in a line and Caspian smirks, “Let’s see which one looks best.”

I raise a brow but nod as Caspian tilts his head away from the counter, “Step over here, for better lighting.” I could almost roll my eyes at how not subtle he was and suppress a snort. As I take a step to the side and away from the vendor, pain lances through my body and I wince.

Caspian lifts one and hands it to me, tilting his head as if studying how it looks on me, but he’s simply staring at my eyes for any indication that something has changed.

I shake my head almost imperceptibly.

One down, four to go.

“Hmmm. Let’s see this one.” He puts one away, and grabs the next. I shake my head again, the pain still radiating in my abdomen is making my legs quiver.

Three left.

“Not quite right, let’s try this one.” He hands me another, and I shake my head again.

Two left.

“Ah, maybe this one,” he suggests, handing me an amulet adorned with a captivating depiction of waves in its center. The image seamlessly blends into the liquid trapped within the pendant. My body sags with relief, and I nod eagerly but instead of handing it to me, he pulls it back. Instantly, a surge of pain courses through me, causing my knees to weaken.

Despite my visible discomfort, Caspian remains indifferent.

I’m about to release a whimper when he grabs the final one, “Actually, maybe this one?” I shake my head as it’s placed next to my neck.

“We’ll take this one.” Caspian holds the true amulet up for the employee to scan, the movement threatening to send my knees buckling beneath me until finally he holds it in my direction and a shudder of relief crashes over me.

Breathing hard, as if I just ran a marathon with sweat beading down my temple, I step away as Caspian pays for it. My eyes scan the crowd and land on a tree in the distance where I spot a hooded figure.

For a moment, I’m nearly positive mismatched eyes stare back at me from beneath the dark hood, but within the blink of an eye, the person has disappeared completely.

I must be going crazy.

We get back to the truck and Caspian’s cell chimes. He checks the screen, his jaw clenching as he unlocks it in a hurry. Cursing at whatever he sees before dialing a number.

“Check the warehouse. I don’t care if you just checked in. Check the warehouse!”

My heart beats loud in my ears and I flinch at his shouts, keeping my eyes directed out the window.

And here I thought I had a temper.

“Good. I want you to call in extra support, double the guard on rotation.” He hangs up and sucks in a deep breath, composing himself and I take my chances to look at him just as he glances at me with a wince.

I can’t help but feel like I was just witness to a conversation or event I shouldn’t have.

“Sorry about that.” He grits through his teeth.

“Did something happen at your warehouse?”

Real subtle, Lara.

“Just a report of a possible robbery for an important item I’ve got stored before it goes for sale.”

“I didn’t know you were in that business.” I try to remain casual, but there’s something in the back of my mind telling me to keep my guard up.

“There’s much you don’t know about me.” The indifference in his tone is off-putting, and I’m silent as he shifts the truck into gear.
