Henry merely shrugs and waves his hand dismissively, “Not sure, maybe they went to a different area and got samples there instead.”

Both Candace and Henry leave toward reception again, and I’m left pondering the missing ribbons and my bedroom window as I walk the samples over to theprocessing lab.

Chapter 5

Friday passes by quickly, and I settle into a comfortable routine. My day begins with an early morning run, followed by a refreshing shower and breakfast. I go to work, review test results from the other lakes as we wait for the samples I gathered to process, have a quick dinner at the office with Henry and Candace, and then head back home.

My Saturday routine is interrupted by a sudden knock on the door and the sound of the doorbell ringing. I’m jolted out of a daydream and quickly turn off the shower, towel my hair, and put on my robe before scrambling downstairs to answer the door.

A hurried knock sounds out again as I peer through the peephole.

“Lara! I can hear you on the other side of the door, mouthbreather!”

I flick the lock and yank it open.

“Bitch! I do not!”

We both laugh and Tammy throws her arms around my shoulders for a tight hug.

“What are you doing here?”

“You didn’t think I’d miss your birthday did you?!”

I groan loudly and squeeze her back.

“Don’t remind me. I’m aging. Creams won’t fix everything, Tammy.”

“That’s what botox is for.” She declares and wiggles her eyebrows suggestively.

I start to close the door behind her, snickering as she shouts, “Wait, I need to get my suitcase!”

She sprints outside quicker than anyone might expect from a five-foot-five woman with heels on, and I wait patiently as she lugs in two full suitcases, storing them against the wall in my living room.

“Are you moving in?” I choke back laughter as she struggles to wheel them into place.

“I didn’t know what people were wearing down here! So... I went the safe route and brought one of every kind of style.” She turns to me and grins, her green eyes bright against her fair complexion and brown hair.

“Hope you brought plaid and jeans!” I laugh and turn to the kitchen to pour coffee for both of us as she frowns. I doubt she has lumberjack attire, and she likely doesn’t know if I’m serious.

“I don’t own anything plaid…” She mumbles as she sits down at the bar chairs along the island.

“We’ll have to make do, then” I chuckle and her eyes narrow on me.

“You haven’t been responding to my messages.” She states, as I jerk my head back and frown, “I haven’t received any.”

“Ugh, don’t tell me the reception out here is that shit.”

“I’ve been getting messages from Claire and my team, but that’s it. Nothing else.”

“Weird. Well, you didn’t miss much. Just be thankful I’m an expert PI and I hunted you down anyways. We’re going to the bar for your birthday, or whatever is like a bar here.”

“Howdidyou find me, anyways?”

Tammy looks over and grins widely at me. “I emailed Candace.”

I roll my eyes, “Of course Candace is just giving my address out. Not that I mind you having it, but what if it was someone pretending to be you?”

“No one would do that, you’re not, like, the president or something.”
