The second brunette glances over and then back at Hailey, “Look at them, they’re totally platonic. If they were together they’d be holding hands like a real couple.”

I’m caught off guard as Darian reaches over to tuck a stray lock of my hair behind my ear, causing my eyes to snap to his. He passes his clothes to me and leans in.

“I actually forgot something, can you hold onto these while I grab it?”

As the calming scent of forest rain envelops my senses, I nod, tucking his clothes alongside mine as he disappears into the aisles off to the side.

The women in front of me watch as he walks away and collectively sigh, continuing their banter about him.

“I wonder what his name is,” Hailey says wistfully.

“I bet it’s something strong, like Jeremy.” Brunette two offers thoughtfully, and it nearly takes all my effort to suppress a laugh.

“Why don’t you go ask him?” Brunette one suggests and nudges the blonde.

Hailey tilts her head, “He’s not here now, and I’m not chasing him. He should be the one to chase me.”

Lord almighty, forgive me for uttering these words but if they represent the future of human intelligence,I might as well abandon all my research endeavors. Willingly.

As the line inches forward once more, the women fall silent as Darian reappears clutching a pair of shoes, and a set of form-fitting women’s shorts with a matching sports bra.

I raise an eyebrow and smirk with amusement as he approaches our spot in line.

“I understand the shoes, but are you taking up wearing women’s clothing?” I’m fighting a laugh as I point to both articles of clothing and continue, “No offense but, I don’t know if either of those will fit you.”

Darian chuckles, taking all the items from my hands with a shake of his head.

My brows pinch together in confusion, “Care to explain then?”

He cocks his head and grins, “I saw them earlier and wanted to see you in them. I forgot to grab them on the way out.”

As I blink at him, his grin widens into a full smile, and I realize he has dimples.

Dimples.

How did I not notice them before?

I’m so fucked.

Darian steps into me, and with his free hand, tips my chin. I inhale sharply as he leans in, and kisses me once softly.

It’s then I feel his tongue subtly against my lips in a silent request to open for him and I eagerly oblige, meeting the passion in his kiss with my own.

After a long intimate moment our kiss breaks off, and his forehead leans against mine. “I wanted to do that at the apartment, but if I had, I don’t think we’d have left.”

My cheeks burn and he smirks before pressing a tender kiss against my brow. It takes a full minute to recollect myself, but once I do the women in front of me are glowering to one another and silent.

Did he do that on purpose?

The line shuffles forward, and the women ahead of us make their way to the register to purchase their items. As they leave, they steal a final lingering glance in our direction before grabbing their bags and exiting the store.

I join Darian at the register and begrudgingly concede as he insists on paying for all our items, despite my protests.

With our main reason for coming to the mall achieved, we take a slight detour to the food court.

My gaze lands on the enticing Chinese takeout joint, and I glance over at Darian who wears an amused grin, “Why don’t you go ahead and order that? I’ll take care of getting the pretzel for Val. If we return with anything else, I’m afraid he might bite my finger off.”

I laugh and nod, “Whoever is done first grabs a table!”
