She sighs dramatically and flips her dry, blonde hair over her shoulder, “You heard me. He hit on me in line for pretzels. We saw you guys at the athleticwear store. I figured you should know that he hit on me, but I said no.”

I can’t help but laugh, and her eyes narrow at me.

“What are you laughing about!?” She nearly yells.

As she shouts, Darian comes up behind her with the pretzel in one hand and briefly halts before any of them know he’s there.

“I’m laughing because everything you said is a lie.” I pause and grin at her, “How’s your hand, by the way? You may want to ice that.”

Her face turns bright red as she opens and closes her mouth like a fish out of water.

Darian speaks up from behind the women, and all three of them jump in surprise, “Cat got your tongue all of a sudden? You didn’t have any problem earlier when you told me to,” He puts his free hand on his chin thoughtfully, “How did you put it? Oh yes. You said I should, and I quote, ‘Leave that white-haired whore’.”

His eyes shimmer with a blend of amusement and anger, made evident by the subtle ripple of muscle along his jawline beneath the stubble of his beard.

I laugh again, “Oh interesting!” I attempt my best impersonation of Hailey’s squeaky voice as I quote her, “She told me, ‘He hiton me in line for pretzels’. Which is strange because I could have sworn I saw her get painfully rejected... unless I’m mistaken?”

Darian chuckles darkly as he walks around them to sit next to me, “Painfully is a colorfully accurate word for it, yes.”

As he puts the pretzel on the table the women are still standing there awkwardly, and he glances up at them.

“Are you going to leave or do you need another reminder why you’re literal specks of dust in this world in comparison to the woman next to me?”

My eyes widen at his comment, but I blink and busy myself using my chopsticks to scoop some noodles and shrimp onto Darian’s plate, then my own. Hailey huffs dramatically and stomps away, the two brunettes following closely behind her.

“I thought they’d never leave.” I mumble as I dip the shrimp in sweet and sour sauce, popping it into my mouth with a groan.

Darian chuckles and scoops some fried rice onto my plate before doing the same to his own.

“If they didn’t, they’d definitely leave after you almost orgasm over fucking Chinese takeout.”

I nearly choke on shrimp and cut a glare at him, “If I didn’t know better, one would think you’re jealous of my food.”

The heated look in his eyes tells me I’ll regret that comment later, and my cheeks flush as I scoop some lo mein into my mouth in an attempt to mask the effect he’s having on me.

Traitorous body.

As we make our way toward the car with leftovers in hand, I notice Val in the passenger seat, his ears alert and attentive as he watches us approach.

“I wonder how far away we were when he knew we were coming.” I say.

“I’d wager he knew once we were 5 feet out the mall doors.” His voice drips with amusement as he opens the passenger door forme then moves to organize our clothes into the duffel bags.

I pull the pretzel out and Val’s tail whips excitedly against the seats as I hand it over to him. His giant maw devours it in four bites, and I laugh loudly.

“Did you have to inhale it? You’re going to give yourself indigestion!”

Val lets out a huff, sniffing the Chinese food from the front seat and another laugh escapes my lips as I unpack our leftovers, placing them on the floor between us for Val to indulge.

Darian gets into the driver’s seat, glancing at Val’s sloppy eating, and chuckles, “I knew he would be excited about it, but didn’t realize he’d be this... enthusiastic.” He gives Val a pointed look, “Clean up your mess after, yea?”

Val huffs in agreement and returns to his noodles.

Chapter 34

We arrive at the grocery store where Val and I remain in the car. As soon as Darian closes his door, I instinctively lock the SUV and Val’s eye flick to mine.

“Force of habit, sorry.” I mumble, shifting in my stead as Val nudges my arm affectionately before resting his head on my lap, and we remain that way for a long moment.
