CHAPTER12

YENDI

Ilay in Jakari’s bed staring at the ceiling. That call from my mama had really pissed me off. I didn’t reveal just how pissed I was in front of Jakari, because I didn’t want him second guessing his decision to be with me. It was bad enough I broke down in tears in front of him. I wanted to answer the phone and go the fuck off. Why the fuck would she call me from my dad’s phone? When I saw ‘Daddy’ go across my phone screen, my heart nearly burst out of my chest. Although I knew he was no longer here, for that split second, it felt like he was here again.

I grabbed my phone and decided to call my sister, Janay. I hadn’t talked to her this past week, but that was normal. We didn’t talk verbally every day, but we texted each other at least every other day just to check in. I’d already had a whole crying session after Jakari left, but now the anger had come back to the forefront.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Janay.”

“Hey, Yendi! How’ve you been?”

“I’ve been good. You sound so upbeat, and I’m calling to drag you down with drama.”

“Girl, I don’t care. I’m just glad to hear from you. Apparently, you and that country man have gotten even closer since you gave him the goods. You ain’t got time for me and poor JaCory.” She giggled. “What happened?”

“Well, that country man is now my man. I’m laying in his bed as we speak. He had to go to a meeting. His name is Jakari, by the way.”

“Oh shit! Congratulations! I’m happy for you! With news like that, whatever has you down has to involve your mother.”

“Your mother, not mine. She called me from Daddy’s phone.”

“She did what?” Janay yelled.

“You heard me. She called from Daddy’s phone. For a split second, I got excited, only to be dropped right on my big ass head.”

“Oh, man. I’m sorry, Yendi. That would have pissed me off. I’m sure it hurt too.”

“Yeah… both. I keep going from one extreme to the other. One minute, I’m angry and the next, I’m crying because I miss daddy so much.”

“Yeah, me too. My weekends feel so empty, so I can imagine how you feel.”

“It’s like every day, I’m missing something. Either he was calling me, or I was calling him. So for that split second, things were back to normal. Anyway. How is JaCory?”

“He’s okay. He’s with his daddy. He’ll be back this evening.”

“Oh okay. So what did you do this weekend?”

“Nothing. Got some much-needed rest. Maybe one weekend, I can fly out there to see you.”

“That would be so great. We keep talking about it but haven’t made any moves yet. I would pay for half your ticket.”

“Yeah, let’s arrange that soon. I can leave here on a Friday afternoon and be back before Terrence brings JaCory home Sunday evening.”

“Sounds good to me. Let me check some things and see what weekend would be good.”

“Yes. I have to see what Friday I would be able to take off work. Are you gonna call her back?”

“Hell no. Have you talked to Marie?”

“Yeah, a couple of days ago. I haven’t talked to Pete though. Have you?”

“No. You’re the only one I talk to regularly, unfortunately.”

“I hate that, especially with you being way out there away from everybody all by yourself.”

“Yeah, it is what it is. I have a couple of acquaintances that could possibly turn into friends. Jakari has an extremely large extended family. I met a lot of them at his cousin’s baby shower yesterday. Don’t worry about me, Janay. I’m okay.”
