I giggled as she continued. “Oh! My dad has an iPhone for us to give away.”

He’d already donated a phone to fulfill the plans this past Friday before the pep rally. “Another one?” I asked wide-eyed.

“Yeah. You get whatever you want when he likes you,” she said, then winked.

Jakari slowly shook his head. “I guess I should’ve toldyouto kiss up to his ass so he can calm down. He better be careful though. I’m possessive too.”

It was my turn to shake my head. I felt good. Even after the bullshit from earlier, today was shaping up to be a good one. I felt like I had a family again, and I would do whatever I had to do to make sure that didn’t change. I couldn’t lose that twice.

CHAPTER13

JAKARI

When we got to Houston and had gotten inside the arena, I had a surge of nervousness overcome me. I didn’t know why, but I was on guard for bullshit. Yendi was beyond excited. It was her first time going to a professional basketball game. Knowing that we were personally invited by her dad’s favorite player was the icing on the cake. Her excitement was contagious, and she had me lowkey excited.

Nate had gotten us box seats, and after a minute or two, I saw why. Noah and his wife, TAZ, had joined us. I’d gotten a chance to meet him for the video shoot months ago. After seeing how excited Yendi was to meet him, he probably knew she would be beyond excited to meet Noah and TAZ. Her back was to them so she didn’t see them walk in.

I approached him and his guard halted me. When Noah saw me, he smiled, and invited me into his presence. We shook hands. “Nate told me you would be here with a lady friend. How are you?”

“I’m good. What about you?” I asked as I noticed Yendi staring wide eyed.

I chuckled and said, “That’s her over there, looking like a deer in headlights.”

He laughed. “Well, this is my wife Taryn, aka TAZ.”

She extended her hand and smiled big. “Hi, Jakari. It’s nice meeting you. I’ve already heard your name a few times tonight.”

“I chuckled. The pleasure is mine.”

I glanced back at Yendi and invited her to join us. We were sitting right next to them anyway. Once she got next to me, I kissed her lips. “Noah… TAZ, this is my lady, Yendi. Yendi, this is Noah and—”

“Umm… I know who they are, Jakari. Thank you so much.”

I chuckled as she extended her hand to shake Noah’s. He chuckled then pulled her in for a hug as I took pictures. TAZ hugged her as well, and I took pictures of the three of them. Noah’s bodyguard then offered to take pictures of the four of us. When Yendi realized we would be sitting next to them she nudged me. “Jakari! Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t know either. I knew he would be here tomorrow for the private viewing of the video Jess did with him, but I didn’t know he would be at the game. I surely didn’t know TAZ would be here.”

She rolled her eyes. I’d invited her to the viewing but told her that Noah wouldn’t be there. I chuckled as she took her seat next to TAZ. I could see how nervous she was with how stiff her shoulders were. Noah and I walked to the glass, and he said, “My brother gon’ self-destruct if he ain’t careful. I nearly did a few years ago. I was at rock bottom, and I knew part of the reason why was because I couldn’t let go of Sonya. The other part was that Jah couldn’t let go of Kermit.”

He side-eyed me as I chuckled. That man’s name was Kahmad, but he insisted on calling him Kermit. “He so in love with Jess his ass can’t function. I don’t even know how he’s playing as well as he is. That woman is pregnant and engaged. She has moved on with her life,” he added.

“She ain’t innocent though. That’s my cousin, and I love her, but I have to talk to her. Although she isn’t the one reaching out, she’s allowing him to be in her space, knowing how Brix feels about it. She looks at Nate as a friend, but if she’s that attached to him, she should have chosen him. Real shit.”

When I heard TAZ hit her signature harmony, I turned to look at her and Yendi. Yendi’s eyes were closed and when I turned back to Noah, his eyes were closed too. “That was amazing. Thank you so much,” Yendi said with tears streaming down her face.

I took a quick picture of her then looked out at the court as the players warmed up. “God said that a soul tie is hard to break. Nate and Jess entered into one another’s soul when they had sex. Their interaction was so full of passion and lust, it has a hold on them. Only prayer can change it. I have a feeling this is going to go from bad to worse before it gets better.”

I didn’t respond to what he said, but I could only hope that he was wrong about that. As if sensing my doubt, he said, “Most times when she hits that polyharmony thing she does, I can hear God’s voice. It’s clear, as if you were talking to me. The first time I heard it I was blown away. That was how I knew she was the one. God told me through her voice. She helped bring me from the depths of depression… just like that woman is doing for you. Satan gon’ come for that. Don’t let him win.”

I didn’t realize just how spiritual Noah was, but I couldn’t help but nod in agreement and shake his hand. When the buzzer sounded, he said, “Let’s watch this nigga run this score up.”

I chuckled. “Hell yeah.”

I sat next to Yendi and kissed her cheek, replaying what Noah had said. What did God tell him was coming to test my love for her? I glanced over at him, seeing he was totally wrapped up in his wife. “Thank you for bringing me along with you, baby. This is amazing.”

“Girl, you ain’t gotta thank me. You my baby. You are always invited to be where I am.”

I kissed her lips and did my best to relax and forget about his warning. Seemed like Jess and I were both in trouble.
