Page 56 of Healing For My Soul

Hey, y’all. I hope you’re having a great day. Umm… Mama showed up at my place two weeks ago and fucked my spirit all the way up. I’m curious to know how she knew where I lived, because I haven’t spoken to her since before I moved.

I knew for sure Janay hadn’t told her. To my knowledge, they still weren’t speaking either. Her ex-husband allowed mama to see JaCory on his weekends, which my sister hated, but she had no desire to see or talk to Mama. So it was either Marie or Pete. I was willing to bet it was Marie though. She was the one that thought she knew what was best in situations like this and tried to force what she believed on others. Although she knew I was against even seeing Mama, she would allow me to be blindsided and then act like she didn’t know what was going to happen.

Janay responded almost immediately. You know I didn’t tell her, because I have no desire to talk to her. Have a great day, Yen. I’m sorry that happened to you. Call me later.

Just as I thought, she wasn’t the one who spilled the beans on my whereabouts. Pete responded right after. That was surprising because he normally couldn’t respond around this time while he was at work. Like Marie, it sometimes took him all day to respond. I knew his job kept him from responding most times, but Marie? I felt like sometimes she was avoiding certain things, confrontation was one of them. She was the type to throw a rock and then act like she didn’t know it could do damage when it hit something.Hmm. Somewhat like her mother.

Hey, Yendi! Thanks, and you have a great day too. I haven’t spoken to Mama in three weeks. She pissed me off yet again with the whole house situation, telling me if I wanted any of Daddy’s things I’d better come now, because she was moving. I don’t understand why she had to be so damn evil to everyone, especially Daddy. I’m having a rough day because I miss him so much.

I took a deep breath after reading his message. I missed Daddy too. I was sure we all did. Although he could get on our nerves at times, he was who we talked to the most. He always wanted to make sure we were good. Mama only called when she had lies to tell or she wanted to be messy about something. This bullshit with her only made things worse for us. Grief seemed to be lingering like a cloud over our heads. We were able to function, but the least little thing concerning him or the bullshit with Mama would knock us back a step.

Apparently, Pete was still having a hard time about her selling the house. Maybe he was just finding out. Janay found out from Terrence, and she told me. I thought she had told him and Marie as well. Since he and Marie were still communicating with her, Janay probably didn’t feel a need to tell either of them.

Me:I’m sorry, Pete. I blocked her a long time ago. So she sold the house?

Pete:It’s been up for sale for at least a month now. She sent a message talking about it had already sold, but that was a lie. I passed by the other day and the sign was still there. Why would she want to sell a house that is paid for, to go rent somewhere else when she’s complaining about not having any money?

Janay:She has money. Don’t let her fool you. Daddy had life insurance, and he was a retired marine.

Pete:Oh, I know, but it still doesn’t make sense, especially since she seems so unbothered about his death. How you cry watching a movie, but don’t shed a tear when your husband of forty-five years dies? That’s ass backwards to me. She can be sympathetic to everyone else, but not to us, knowing how close we were to Daddy. It makes me think she doesn’t care.

Me:Maybe the guilt of how she treated him is suffocating her in there. If that isn’t eating her alive then she’s even colder and eviler than I thought. I’m about to go into the gym at work, so my signal is going to be worse. If I don’t respond to further text messages, I’ll talk to y’all when I leave to go home.

Janay:Okay. Have fun at the pep rally. LOL!

I rolled my eyes and responded with a side-eye emoji and,Yay.

When I walked into the gym, kids were all over the place as usual. I made my way to the top corner and leaned against the wall, ready for it to all be over.

* * *

The minuteI left the school grounds, my text message alerts went crazy. I knew it was the group thread between my siblings. Thankfully, my apartment was only down the street from my job, so it only took me five minutes to get home, get inside, and get settled. I went to the messages and scrolled up to where I left off.

Pete:Yendi, you got your pom poms? LOL!

Janay:She’s gonna cuss you out when she comes back. LOL!

I slowly shook my head with a slight smile on my face. The next message wiped the smile right off my face though. It was from Marie.Call me when you can, Yendi.

Janay:Marie, you told Mama where Yendi lived? Why would you do that?

Marie:She said she wanted to talk to her and make things right between them. I know Yendi needed that.

Janay:And you know she’s incapable of apologizing and very capable of lying. Even if you did, why wouldn’t you tell Yendi? You would just let her be blindsided?

Marie:If I would have told Yendi, she wouldn’t have even been home to talk to her.

Janay:And that should be her decision to make, not yours. You weren’t around for most of the time we were dealing with her while Daddy was in the hospital. You came for four days and thought you’d seen it all. You pretended to be disgusted with her behavior, but you never stopped talking to her. It makes me think you enjoy her bullshit.

Janay lit into her ass. That was unusual. Janay and Marie usually got along pretty well and talked more than Marie and I did. However, I felt like Janay was feeling defensive of me since I’d moved to get away, and I was grateful to have her in my corner… to havesomebodyin my corner. All conversation had ceased after Janay’s last message. I knew it would. I was surprised Pete didn’t interject with a message of his own. He must’ve gotten busy.

I took a deep breath and pulled up Marie’s number to call her. When it started ringing, my head started pounding. I felt like I was about to explode on her ass. When she answered, she said, “Hey, Yendi. I’m so sorry.”

“Marie, no you aren’t. You do what you feel is right or okay, and you don’t consider anyone else in your decisions. I moved away to avoid her. Why would you think it was okay to give her my address?”

“I know. She just said she wanted to make things right between y’all and that you wouldn’t allow her the opportunity.”

“No, I wouldn’t have, because you know as well as I do that nothing is going to change! She’s a master manipulator, and you’ve allowed yourself to be manipulated. You know the truth, and you still fell for her bullshit! Quit dragging me into her shit! I don’t want a thing to do with her. She disturbs my peace and my entire soul. Why would you want to put me through that all over again?”
