“I’m good. How was your day?”

“It was pretty good. I actually just got home not long ago. A couple of my students have agreed to help me with my initiative to get more teens to read. We were making plans, and I’m excited about some of their ideas. How are you and JaCory?”

JaCory was her eight-year-old son. I didn’t ask about her husband, because she’d left him only a couple of weeks before Daddy died. Our mother had the bright idea to go visit him after my sister and her son moved out. She stayed there for two whole hours… just him and her in the house. My sister had to witness that shit from her doorbell camera app. That was another story though.

“We’re good. I called to tell you about your mama.”

I rolled my eyes. “What has she done now?”

“She called Terrence and told him she’s been trying to call us, because she’s selling the house.”

Terrence was Janay’s ex-husband. Although they weren’t legally divorced, that was what he was now referred to as. “She hasn’t called me. And furthermore, I don’t give a damn. She can do what she wants. That’s what she’s been doing anyway.”

She literally planned my dad’s service without any of our input and told people we didn’t show up to help her. Of course, that was a lie. I’d shown up and she either wasn’t home or had refused to answer the door. Janay called her and she said she was at her brother’s house, because when I called her, it went straight to voicemail like she’d blocked me. We literally had to find out from someone else when the memorial service would be. I was so done with her foolishness.

Janay laughed. “Me either. I told him that she hasn’t called me either and that she’s lying. Of course, his ass believes everything she says. I don’t care about anything she does at this point. I just wanted you to know, especially since he said Marie knows.”

Marie was my older sister. She and my brother were still trying to entertain my mother simply because of that ‘we only have one mother’ bullshit. If my only mother was putting me through bullshit, I refused to stick around.

“It doesn’t make sense for her to sell the house just to go rent somewhere else. The house is paid for. She’s going to pay at least a thousand dollars a month wherever she goes. That’s dumb to me, but whatever.”

“Right. Whatever she’s going to be paying in rent, she can save to pay the taxes and homeowners insurance.”

“Right!”

I rolled my eyes. “In other news, I got propositioned by a fine ass country man today.”

“What! What did he look like? What did he say?”

“Girl, he came to pick up his lil cousins from school. They were helping me in the library. I asked him if he wanted to come tomorrow and help us and that nigga told me the only thing he wanted to help me with was experiencing the most powerful orgasm of my life.”

“No he didn’t! Did you shut him down? I can’t believe he said that his first time meeting you.”

“I didn’t shut him down, per say. I was in shock that he actually said that. He’s chocolate like we like them, and he has to be every bit of six feet three. He looks to be about Pete’s height, maybe a little taller.”

Pete was our older brother. He was the oldest and thought he was always right. Couldn’t tell him shit. I continued. “It’s something about him that won’t let me ignore him. He was so damn confident and had the right amount of aggression. If anything, it turned me on.”

“You slut!” she yelled then laughed. “So are you going to call him?”

“Probably this weekend. I told him I didn’t fuck strangers. I need to get to know him a little bit first.”

“Good. I don’t want to have to put an APB out on you way out there in Texas. I miss you, Yendi.”

“I miss you too, sis. You’ll have to come visit. Who knows, you may find a country man out here that will put Terrence’s pitiful ass to shame.”

“Well, that won’t take much.”

We laughed at her comment. “I’m going to a neighboring town where he’s from Friday. His family is extremely prominent and practically runs the town. From what his cousins have said, they have a large family. The diner I’m going to eat at is owned by a couple of their family members. I’m almost sure he’ll be there.”

“Okay! I see how you playing it. You trying to force him to see more than sex when he looks at you.”

“Yeah, but honestly, I think he already does. The way he stared at me said more than fucking.”

“Well, you’ll find out soon enough.”

“Mamaaaa!” her son yelled.

“And that’s your cue to go. Kiss my nephew for me.”
