The woman at the counter turned to see who was talking, and I couldn’t help but give her a smirk. It was Yendi Odom. She smiled slightly. “Hey, Jakari.”

“What’s up?” I asked as I bit my bottom lip while staring at her.

I swore I wanted to live between those big ass titties. I walked closer to her as Aunt Jen smiled at me. “Hey, Aunt Jen.”

“Hey, baby.”

She rang up Yendi’s food, and I surprised myself by saying, “I got it.”

She smiled at me then grabbed her container and walked away. When I turned back to the counter, my mama was standing there with her eyebrows lifted. “How do y’all know each other?”

“She’s the librarian at the school. I picked up a couple of your nieces from school Wednesday, and they were playing matchmaker.”

She chuckled. “Well, she’s a beautiful woman.”

“She is, but don’t go getting no ideas. I don’t even know her like that.”

She dramatically poked her lip out as I slowly shook my head. She’d been expressing her need for grandbabies. Now that Aunt Jenn and Uncle WJ had grandbabies on the way, I supposed she felt left out. She handed me my container of smothered pork chops, rice, yams, and cabbage. I ate almost the same thing every Friday, so there was no guesswork involved.

“Thank you, Mama.”

“You’re welcome.”

I gave my card to Aunt Jenn to pay for Yendi’s food, and she quickly handed it back to me. “I just wrote it off. Enjoy your lunch, baby.”

“Thanks, Auntie.”

I made my way to my family first as they watched me. “What’s up, y’all?”

“You tell us,” Uncle Storm said as he glanced at Yendi.

She was watching me hard, probably trying to figure out why I didn’t sit with her. I needed to talk to my people first. “Uncle Storm—”

“Hol’ it right there. You need to take a lesson from Jess and Tyeis’s book. Uncle Mayor to you. Even Decaurey has gotten with the program.”

I slapped his hand as I rolled my eyes. “I’m not calling you that shit. Does Uncle Jasper call you Brother Mayor?”

“No, but I’m already having sanctions imposed on his lil liquor store.”

He could barely get that shit out before he started laughing at Uncle Jasper’s facial expression. “Storm, I will fuck you up like I used to do when we were kids.”

Those two were always going back and forth and didn’t care who heard them. I could see Yendi smile at their banter. “Well, actually, Unc, I wanted to see how things were going with Price Daniels. Where are we on the contract to partner with him?”

Uncle Jasper tuned his attention to me. “Nesha is drawing up the contract as we speak.”

“That’s what’s up. Philly and I are also going to Watchful Eyes today, since the nephew is in Beaumont. We want to discuss a plan of action.”

They all nodded as I glanced over at Yendi. “Uncle Storm and Uncle Jasper, will y’all come over here with me for a minute?”

I stood from the table and headed to Yendi. Her eyes widened slightly when she saw my uncles behind me. “Yendi, this is my uncle, Jasper Henderson, Ashanni’s dad, and this is Uncle Mayor Storm Henderson, Maui’s dad,” I said, smirking at how I introduced Uncle Storm.

She stood from her seat and shook both their hands with a smile. Uncle Storm frowned as he always did. I could see that made her uneasy by the stiffness in her shoulders. Finally, he said, “Are you related to any St. Andrews?”

“Not that I know of. Do I look like them?”

“You somewhat resemble my wife. That’s her maiden name.”

“Oh, well I know that’s a compliment. Thank you, Mayor Henderson,” she said, then winked.
