He gave me a soft smile and a stylus for me to sign his electronic pad. Once I signed and gave it back to him, he smiled then handed the bouquet to me. “Have a nice day, ma’am.”

I nodded and closed the door, being sure to lock it. “What do you mean you can’t accept any more flowers?”

I practically jumped out of my fucking skin. I forgot that fast Taryn was on the phone. “Shit, you scared me. When I got home, Arik had flowers all over the damn place.”

Thinking about the fact that he had a key, I set the flowers down and went back to the door to put the chain on.

“And he sent more flowers?”

“I don’t think these are from him. I think you know that. Someone had to give him my address.”

She giggled as I pulled the card from the stem. I opened the envelope and pulled it out to read:

Hey, beautiful. I remember what you said about pursuing you, but I didn’t like the way you looked when I left. I know the look of heartbreak. I hope these cheer you up. Have a great day. Nate

P.S.- If things change, you know how to get in touch.

“Well? What did it say?”

I rolled my eyes. “Give me his number, nosy. Just that he hoped the flowers cheered me up and to have a great day.”

She giggled excitedly and rattled off his number as I typed it in my phone. I knew his game schedule as well as he did. He had a game tonight in Dallas, then he would be in Miami this coming weekend. I was sure he would be glad for the three-day break. He would probably be at the concert Friday night, since Noah would be in Miami.

“Okay, Kenya. I have to go. Brook is whining, so she probably needs changing. Plus, I have to pack for Miami.”

“Okay, sis. I’ll see y’all out there Thursday. I can’t wait to be on stage with you guys again.”

“I love you. Now call Nate!”

I slowly shook my head. “I love you too.”

I ended the call and stared at the number I’d punched in. Before losing the nerve, I hit the send button and listened to it ring. Just when I thought it would go to voicemail, he answered. “Hello?”

“Hi, Nate. It’s Kenya.”

“I know. Hey, beautiful.”

My cheeks heated up. His voice was so damn tender. It would probably be a shock to my senses if I ever heard him yell. His voice reminded me so much of Michael Jordan’s. Just a smooth baritone that I could imagine in my ear on a daily basis. “I wanted to thank you for the flowers. They’re beautiful,” I said as I glanced at the bouquet of all pink roses, tulips, and lilies.

“You’re welcome.”

“I suppose you’re getting ready for the game tonight, huh?”

“Mentally, yes. I’m at home chilling for another hour or two. What are you doing?”

I glanced around my place and decided to be open with him. “I’m about to start packing shit up to take to the dumpster.”

He was quiet for a moment. “The dumpster?”

“Yeah. My place was full of flowers when I got home. I almost didn’t accept yours until I saw the basketballs all over the envelope.”

“Well, I knew he would try to make up with you by sending flowers, so I told them to use an envelope to distinguish who’d sent them without being too cheesy. The lady was trying to add a plastic basketball to the arrangement.”

I chuckled. “Yeah, that would have been a bit much. I’m not going to keep you. I just wanted to tell you thank you.”

“You aren’t keeping me, Kenya, but I know you probably just got home. TAZ told me your flight would be landing mid-morning Tuesday. Call me anytime. Is it okay if I save your number?”

I smiled slightly. “I expected you to. Otherwise, I would have called you anonymously.”
