“And you would have had to leave a message, because I wouldn’t have answered that shit.”

He chuckled, causing me to chuckle softly. “I’ll text before calling. I don’t want to interfere with whatever you have going at home.”

“He cheated on me, Nate,” I blurted. “That was why my mood changed that day.”

I didn’t know why I felt so comfortable telling him that. For some reason, I felt like I owed him an explanation, although I knew I didn’t. “He told you that or did you find out?”

“He called me. Fucked up, huh?”

“Hell yeah. I’m sorry.”

“Yeah, me too. I don’t know why I spilled that shit on you, knowing you have a game tonight. Forgive me.”

I closed my eyes as he said, “I’m glad you felt comfortable enough to tell me. Fuck a game. You can always talk to me about anything. Okay?”

A slight smile formed on my lips. “Are you really this perfect?”

“Shiiiid, apparently not since I’m still single.”

Although he said it jokingly, I could hear the hurt in what he said. “Tell me about it.”

“Have you decided what you’re going to do?”

“About what?”

“Your relationship.”

“What relationship?”

“Point taken,” he said with a slight chuckle. “Okay. Well, wish me luck tonight.”

“I will. I’ll be watching.”

“Good. That makes me wanna show out just for you, since I know you’ll be keeping track of my stats.”

“Mm. I can’t wait to enjoy the show then. Have a great game, Nate.”

“Thanks, Kenya.”

He ended the call, and I held the phone to my chest like a lovesick teenager. After taking a deep breath, I looked around the loft and prepared to make several trips to the dumpster.

CHAPTER 5

NATE

As the team celebrated, I couldn’t help but smile. LeClaren Foster had an amazing game. He was the star player of our team. It was guaranteed that whenever he had a good game, the win was ours, especially if a nigga like me stepped up as well. I didn’t need anyone to remind me of my stats. I’d scored nearly thirty points tonight along with twelve assists and four blocks. A nigga was on one.

Several of my teammates congratulated me on a good game. I never really participated in the turnup after a game, at least not for the past year. I would much rather turn up with people I loved.

I grabbed a towel to make my way to the shower when I got stopped by a reporter. “Nate, you had an amazing game tonight!”

“Thank you.”

“You usually have a decent game, but tonight was spectacular. What was your motivation?”

I smiled slightly as I thought about my words to Kenya. “God is always my motivator, along with my family. However, someone special assured me she would be watching. I told her that I would make sure I showed off for her tonight.”

The reporter laughed excitedly. “And show off, you did! If she motivates you this way for every game, we can expect a run for the championship!”
