“Unfortunately, in the entertainment industry, you better get used to it. They’ll go to crazy ass lengths to uncover a story if you have one worth telling. When they realized David Guillory was my father, it was all over the place. Thankfully, I was already in the NBA, playing for Dallas. I can honestly say that my hard work got me there and not who they knew my father to be.”

I made my way to him and grabbed his phone from the table to slide into my pocket so he wouldn’t be tempted to use it when it vibrated. The name on the lock screen gave me pause, and he clearly noticed it. “Why you turning red?”

“Jessica just texted you.”

His eyebrows lifted, then he frowned. “What she want? Read it.”

It was my turn to lift my eyebrows. This was a woman he was in love with and could possibly still be in love with, and he wanted me to read the text. That let me further know that he indeed had nothing to hide. I unlocked his phone and opened the message. Before beginning to read it, I glanced at him and asked, “Are you sure?”

“Yeah. Come here.”

I sat on his lap, and he wrapped his arms around me. Bringing my attention back to his phone, I read aloud, “Hi, Nate. I know I said that we couldn’t talk anymore, but I had to check on you. I saw the highlights from the game last night, but I haven’t seen anything regarding your condition. Is everything okay?”

He nodded but didn’t say a word for a moment. “Okay. Thanks, baby.”

“Do you want me to respond to her?”

“Naw. Check and see if there’s a message from Jakari. If there is, you can respond to that one. He’ll fill her in.”

I nodded and scrolled the many messages and came across one from Jakari that was sent last night, not long after he sustained the injury. “There’s one,” I said as I opened it. “Nate… shit! I know you won’t see this message for a while, but when you can, please let me know you a’ight, man. That shit looked bad. We’re praying for you.”

He nodded again and said, “Respond with, thanks man. I’m okay. Just a slight concussion. I can’t look at a screen for a couple of days, so my lady is sending the message. Tell Kenya hello. Thanks for your prayers.”

I side-eyed him. He was making sure Jakari didn’t say anything out of pocket or about Jessica. So I said, “I’m not putting all that.”

He shrugged his shoulders. “Suit yourself. He’s gonna keep talking.”

He went back to his breakfast as I attempted to call the front desk again, only for a message from Jakari to come through. I thought the man would have still been asleep. It wasn’t even six in the morning here yet. If he was in Texas like Jessica, it was even earlier there. Nate glanced at me and said, “Told you. What did he say?”

I rolled my eyes as Nate chuckled and opened the message. “Damn, nigga. How long you gon’ be out?”

I responded,Around two weeks. By the way, this isn’t Nate. I’ m only relaying the messages and his responses.

Oh, shit! This must be Kenya. Nice to somewhat meet you, baby girl. Tell my boy congratulations.

“What all you and that nigga saying?” Nate asked, claiming my attention.

I smiled. “I told him that I wasn’t you, just someone relaying the messages, and he automatically assumed it was me.” Going back to the phone, I read, “Oh shit! This must be Kenya. Nice to somewhat meet you, baby girl. Tell my boy congratulations.”

Nate chuckled. “Tell him I said thanks.”

I responded,Nice to somewhat meet you as well. He said thanks.

“Who is Jakari anyway? How does he know Jessica?”

“He’s her first cousin. I met them the same day, nearly a year and a half ago.”

I nodded, then set his phone down and finally made a call to complain to the front desk. I could see Nate staring at me as he ate with a slight smile on his face. After I ended the call, he said, “Shiiiid, if you knew the sports entertainment industry, I’d hire you to be my agent.”

I chuckled and finally sat down to eat my breakfast. We had to get a move on it if we were going to be on time for our flight. The way we’d dived into this relationship was unbelievable. It was like, yesterday morning, we were brand new, and today, it already seemed like we’d been together for years. I glanced at him as I stuffed my face to see he was finishing up his omelet.Damn.He was still perfect… a hint of stubbornness but perfect.

CHAPTER 11

NATE

When we got to my house, I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. My mama was already here, and I knew she would be trying to baby me in front of Kenya. I should’ve had Kenya call her for me so I could tell her that she would be joining me, but it didn’t cross my mind until now. Kenya had me gone. The only thing on my mind was hugging up to her all day. She was so relaxed in this already.

When Jessica had texted, my heart rate had damn near climbed to the mountaintop. While I was trying to forget about her, I hadn’t just yet. I did my best to hide my emotions when Kenya said so, but I believed I made the right decision by having her respond to Jakari instead. He would let her know that I had a lady now, so she wouldn’t text again. I should probably block her number like I did her on IG, especially now that I was with Kenya. If there was an emergency of some sort, Jakari could be our middleman.
