“Sure.” She smiled slyly. “I only hope he appreciates it.”

Me too. Maybe he'll show me how much by making all these maybes and somedays a reality. But until then I would take the hotel room and restaurant food.

Nova

Twenty minutes later and I was finally at the hotel. I arrived on foot since they said I wasn't allowed to ride Girl around base.Humans. I huffed under my breath as I entered the strange revolving doors. I went around a few times in a circle before finally coming out on the other side.

"Can I help you, sir?" A woman with light brown hair asked, pressing her lips together.

She was nervous when meeting my eyes. I was outnumbered with all the humans in the room staring at me. I was the one who should've been nervous.

"Yes, I'm Nova and would like to check into my room."

"Nova. Ah yes, I see your name here. A gentleman booked the room for you not long ago."

"Yes, Franky."

"Yup. I'll get you checked in and get you your room key."

"Thank you." Once I had my key, I walked to the elevator she told me to get on to take me to my room. Another man hit the button for me. "First time, huh?"

"Yup."

He was friendly enough. The elevator ride was short, and he showed me how to use my room key. “Need anything else just let me know.” He winked.

What did that mean? Some of the human gestures were a mystery to me. Didn't matter how many movies or shows I watched. Winking was right there with shaking hands and kissing on the cheek. One seemed flirty, another more formal, while the last one came off as endearing. No way that man was flirting with me.

I was more than likely misunderstanding him. My room was cool and smelled of cleaning products. I'd used some in my home before. When I first started trading, I took just about anything. As long as it was from the human world, I accepted the offer. A smile stretched across my face as I bounced up and down on the mattress. This was nothing like my bed. It was soft and big. I rolled around on it a few times before spotting a paper with pictures of food on a small brown lamp holder. I skimmed my way to a hamburger and chicken tenders.

“CALL THIS NUMBER TO ORDER,” large letters said at the bottom. And I did, getting someone on the other end of the line almost immediately. I told the man on the phone what I wanted, and he said it would be up in forty minutes. I remember when I’d first learned about time. I collected twenty four different clocks, setting them with the times of different parts of the human world. I went based off Central after I got tired of keeping up with all of them. What time did Frank go by at home?

The one on base went by Eastern. It was displayed on an alarm clock, which also had a radio. The TV was bigger than mine and it took a while to figure out the remote. There were so many things showing and breaks between shows and movies advertising food. I flipped through each one, going from laughing at cartoons to smiling at something calledThe Golden Girls. I jumped to my feet when a knock came to my door.

The food got here when he’d said it would, but it felt like it hadn’t been more than a couple of minutes. I eyed both plates and took a bite from each one, savoring every taste. All of it was delicious and satisfied my taste buds like nothing I'd ever had. The fries were my favorite part. A perfect combination of salty and crunchy. So many flavors burst in my mouth from the meat in the cheeseburger. I devoured everything way too fast, then wished I’d taken my time.

I stacked my plates on a small table by a large glass door that led me outside, but the engulfing heat and darkness had me rushing back in. It wasn't as dark as the rest of our world, and there were streetlamps and glowing signs, but that wasn't enough to make me stay out there for long. What about creatures with wings? Did the base walls prevent them from flying over, looking for tasty human snacks?

I explored the rest of the large space. Sat in every chair, touched each surface, opened all the doors, and spun around in the bright bathroom. There was hot and cold water. A real toilet too, that flushed at the push of a lever like I'd seen happen in movies. Everything I knew about the human world was from movies, books, music, magazines, and my master.

Wanting to think about something other than him, I stuck my hands under the sink’s running water, trying out all the different temperatures.

I was caught off guard when the phone rang, and rushed to the room, watching it move before I finally answered it.Did I messup already? Was I being kicked out?I’d tried to be quiet and not stomp around. Maybe the glass door shut louder than I thought it did.

“Hello?” My hand shook around the phone.

“Good to know you had no issues checking in. Have you eaten yet?” The voice was deep and settled something inside me. I could listen to it forever.

A smile crept onto my face as I said his name out loud for the first time. “Franky?”

“That's me. Hello, Nova.”

“Hi,” I said shyly. “You have a very nice voice.”

“So do you. It's soft and gentle. Almost soothing.”

“And yours is nice and pleasing. Like a favorite song.”
