“I'm glad I can be one of those people.” I smiled at him, and his eyes lit up in wonder.

“You have two different colored eyes. I didn't notice that at first.”

“Yeah. One green and one blue. I used to hate it but over time I’ve grown to be happy with how I am.”

As he walked a little faster, I quickened my steps to keep up. I wasn't sure if anyone had been staring at us and didn't care because he didn't. He only paid attention to me. “As you should be. I like your eyes and your hair too. It's very different and suits you well.”

“You don't have to add extra compliments in order to get your mushrooms.”

He barked out a laugh. “Ah yes, my mushrooms. I can't believe I already forgot all about them.”

“Should we keep walking, or do you want to stop somewhere?”

He glanced around. “It doesn't matter to me. If you're hungry, we can head to the pizza place now instead of waiting another hour.”

“What?” I asked, and my heart felt like it jumped in my throat.

He smirked. “I mean, we are supposed to meet at the pizza place soon anyway, right? Nova.” He playfully bumped my arm.

My throat grew tight. “You know who I am?”

A laugh fluttered out of him. “How could I not? You said you were the only one of your kind, you were really fascinated with hand holding, and are always in the library. You're very much how you are on the phone. I recognized your voice and laugh almost immediately. I didn't want to speak too soon though.”

“I knew it was you too. I mean, you telling me your name helped and so did your pic on the dating app.”

“Yeah, you definitely had way more to go off than me.” He glanced down at our joined hands. “So this is how you tell me what you do for a living, huh? By tricking me into being one ofyour customers.” He winked, forcing me to turn with him down a different path.

“It was definitely a strange coincidence.”

“Yeah. I don't expect things to be any other way with you at this point.”

We reached the pizza shop, and not only did he keep hold of my hand while opening the door, but he didn't let go when we got to our seat either. “Do you happen to know if it's been thirty minutes yet?” he asked, settling our hands on top of the table as he squeezed closer to me in the booth.

“No. I didn't even think about it, sorry. I have this old watch, but I don't think it has a timer.”

“Let me guess, you got it in a trade.”

“Yup. All the guy wanted was a couple of random branches. Don't know what he did with them though.”

“I think some humans are like you and are happy with just having something from another world.”

“Yeah. That's a good way to look at it. Makes me feel more similar to them.”

“You're more similar than you realize. You know what I think?”

“What's that?”

“You're kinder than most humans I've grown up around. More thoughtful and considerate too.”

“Yeah . . .” I shifted in place, biting the inside of my cheek. “That you've seen so far.”

“Why do you keep saying that?”

“There's a reason why I keep getting rejected in the human world. Whenever I'm feeling threatened, a bad side of me sometimes shows up as a defense mechanism.”

“Bad side?”

“Yeah.” I blew out a sigh, and Franky asked the waiter to come back when he stopped by our table to see if we were ready.
