“Napkins. There are both cloth and paper ones.”

“Napkins,” I repeated, wiping my chin.

“They have cake, cookies, and I think brownies. I've only ever been once. Maybe it's different each day.”

Wait . . . all that cost money and so did pizza. Panic rose in me. How could I have forgotten? “I just realized. I don't have any money. I can pay you back later.”

He waved me off. “Don't worry about it. I don't mind. You came all this way for me after all. I know it's not easy.”

“I like coming here for you, but I hate how you keep having to spend all this money on me.”

“And I like having a reason to keep you around longer. Really, it's not a big deal. It's just money.”

“You say that like you have a lot.”

“That’s because I do. I've worked most of my life, and never really go anywhere or do anything. So, it's nice getting to finally put all the spending money I've saved over the years to good use.”

The waiter returned, leaving a paper with numbers on it, and Franky lay a card down.

“That’s one of those money cards, right?” I asked, watching the waiter slide it into his apron.

“Yeah. A debit card. There are also credit cards. You guys don't have any currency, right?”

“No. We trade a lot. I mean, you have to be careful who you ask though, because some will cheat and not hold up their end of the bargain.”

“That happens in our world too. You have to be careful everywhere it looks like.”

“Yeah. I feel okay here though.”

“Yeah, here isn't a bad place to be.”

The waiter brought back his card and we took off to the bakery right away. Franky was right about all the different options. He got one of everything they had for me to try, and we ended up leaving with a large bag, filled with twenty desserts that had bites in them. The sky darkened as we entered a bookstore, and I kept glancing out the window, wondering if Henry's offer for me to crash at his place was still available.

“Don't worry. I'll take care of you,” Franky said, wrapping an arm around my shoulder.

“You will?”

“Yeah. I'll get you a room for the next two days. That way, we have a place to watch the movie at.”

“Franky . . .”

“I won't take no for an answer.”

I chewed on the inside of my cheek and nodded slowly. Franky showed me some of his favorite books, and even bought me one. It was so easy for him to be so giving. How did anyone ever not like him in his world? I made a note in my head, to go outside and look for more stuff for him before our movie night tomorrow. Following the lights on the sidewalk, we walked to the hotel as the light in the sky disappeared more.

“Franky, I can walk myself there.”

“I know, but I want to make sure you get there okay.”

“What about you?” I glanced up, and my stomach twisted as I saw a few creatures flying above us, staying in the dim areas of the sky.

“I can get a room here too. Or maybe even one with two beds.”

“You . . . you want to share a room with me?”

“Yeah.” He shrugged, completely unbothered by the idea. “Why not?”

“We don't know each other that well yet.” Not to mention, most didn’t even like being in the same building as me. I alreadyknew Franky was different though. The more he treated me like I was important to him, the more I wanted to keep him in my life.
