“You act like he's the only one you've spoken to on that damn app.”

“He's the only one I've been interested enough to meet in person. The sexiest little monster I've ever seen. He recently got into one of those condos being built outside the wall that has Wi-Fi, so we can video chat now. He's right by the cell phone towers and doesn’t have to make a long trip like he did before.”

“Wonderful.”

“He is. He has a roommate too.” Edgar winked.

“And you think that'll sway me, why?”

“Just saying. Might give you a little more to think about. She's cute from what I'm told. Some kind of shifter I believe.”

“I'm kinda seeing someone at the moment.”

Resting an elbow on the table, he rolled his eyes. “You mean the chick who keeps dodging you and barely gives you the time of day? Pretty sure that's the opposite of seeing someone.”

“She recently got out of a serious relationship so I'm giving her time. I can wait. I'm a patient guy.” There were other reasons we hadn't hit it off the last two dates but I wasn't going to get into it with him. He didn't have to be aware of all my issues.

“For how long? Because something tells me you'll be waiting forever when it comes to her. Trust me, you're wasting your time. I know girls like that. She's giving you all these excuses because she doesn't want to hurt your feelings. You need to move on to someone who's going to make the effort back.”

“Someone like your new friend's roommate in monster world?”

Laughing, Edgar stood up from his chair. “Exactly. I have to get back to work but let me know what your answer is soon.”

“Yeah, yeah, I will. I need to get back too.”

“See you later, man.” He shoved the chair under the table, lifting a hand in the air.

“See ya.” After I finished my food, I ordered a coffee to go and headed back to the hospital. The surgery went well. No complications today, no complaints. I cleaned myself up in the wash area and changed back into my clothes before leaving for the day. On my way out to the parking lot, a co-worker of mine stopped me with a sad look in her eyes. “There you are, Dr. Flores.”

“Did something happen?”

“There was a complication with a surgery from a month ago.” She twisted the bottom of her white coat between her fingers. That wasn't good. Rose was normally an easygoing person, but that part of her was nowhere to be seen today.

My heart dropped into my stomach. “What kind?”

“An infection. They couldn't stop it. The patient passed an hour ago.”

“An infection?”

“Yes. These things happen sometimes. It's not anyone's fault.”

Rubbing a hand down my face, I looked down to the ground, my whole body on edge. “Are you sure it wasn't from anything we did, or didn't do?”

“There's no way to know for certain. I'm so sorry. I know you and Mr. Duncan were friends.”

“Yeah, he . . . he played bingo with my parents sometimes.” Did they know? His wife? No way she’d be taking this well. Who would be?

“I know. I really am sorry,” she said, her eyes full of compassion.

“Yeah,” I said quietly, unable to meet her eyes. “Me too.”

She placed her hand on my arm lightly. “Don't beat yourself up over this one. You did everything you could.”

Did I? “Sure. Thank you for telling me.”

“I thought it best you got a heads up before the family contacted you.”

“I appreciate it. Have a good rest of your night.” Slowly, moving one foot in front of the other, I approached my car as she called after me. “Franky?”
