“Then I say you should take me to meet them.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow so we can walk outside and you can introduce me to Girl and your trees.”

“Okay.” He said happily. “Tomorrow.”

My phone went off and I ignored it the first time. The third time it rang, I picked it up when I saw Edgar's name on the screen.

“Hello?”

“Are you home?” Edgar's voice was strained.

“Yeah, why?”

“Because the cops are coming.”

“What?” I sat up on the couch and Nova wore a worried expression.

“They think you are the human who brought the poison here,” Edgar said with rushed words.

“What would give them that idea?”

“Because some employee from your work said they saw you storing plant clippings in your locker. They searched and found some and are testing them now.” Wind blew around him.

“Those are harmless and they'll see that once the results come in.”

“It doesn't matter. They are coming to arrest you and you need to leave. Now. You can hang low somewhere until we can clear your name. You won't be able to help me behind bars.”

Someone banged on my door. I hung up the phone and grabbed Nova's hand. “Looks like we're seeing your house tonight.”

“What's happening?” Nova followed me to the room.

“I'll explain later. Let's get out of here first.” He grabbed his tablet and bag before disappearing into the closet. I closed the door behind me and went behind the clothes, feeling for an opening. Nova pulled me through. We both fell to the floor near a teal bean bag.

“They can't find us, can they?”

“Only if they check your closet and accidentally fall in.”

My phone rang again and I answered it.

“What now?”

“If I were you, I'd turn yourself in or else your friend will be the fifth person to suddenly fall ill this week.”

“Henry?”

Nova's eyes studied me closer.

“Don't make me repeat what I said.”

“Where's Edgar? What have you done with him?”

“Nothing yet. And no harm will come to him if you do as I say,” he said curtly.

“Okay. I'll turn myself in. But you have to let him go before I do.”

Nova's eyes turned to slits as he shook his head, whispering, “no,” to me.
