“I don’t; that’s why it’s a belief.” Ronald smiled after saying that. Yes, that pretty face smiling was what I needed to smile as well. For the first time, I’d started to see a new side to Ronald. Maybe the real side. To my surprise, I found myself leaning in. Why I did this, I couldn’t answer, but I felt the urge to. Ronald’s eyes were clearly on my lips, like a man possessed. Kiss me, I prayed. Hold me closer and draw me into your arms. My thoughts were focused on experiencing what I felt would be an amazing moment with him. I didn’t consider anything else. At this moment, I didn’t see him as my boss, or consider the fact that we had only met and talked twice, with the first time being a rather negative encounter. Perhaps I was buoyed by his kind words and care for me today as well as his handsomeness. Right now, my feelings led me, not logic.

Then both of us understood the situation when a door opened. I coughed, shifting back, as did he. Carmen came out of the studio room to see us seated.

“They wanna start talking about some music stuff that I have no idea about,” she stated, and it made me smile.

“Alright,” Ronald got up before turning to me. “You coming?”

“Yeah,” I stood up too and we headed back to work after a very intriguing moment. What did that mean for our relationship moving forward? I had no freaking clue.

Chapter six

Ronald Razor’s POV

“I thought that one was pretty good,” I added, and she laughed. I’d found myself spending more time with Maryam as we worked on an album. Usually, I got very hands-on in the production of a singer’s first album because I needed it to be a success. We didn’t just sign people and let them do whatever they wanted. Their job was to be creative while ours focused on making that creativity sellable to the public.

Maryam followed the same part, so nobody questioned it. Sure, I spent way more time than necessary with her, but I could say it was because she just joined, and I needed to put her through a lot. Gale also spent time with her in the studio, but after that, she usually came to meet me before heading home. We hung out and talked about the music side of things, mostly. The vibe I got from her told me she liked my company, but could that just be her carefree and positive personality making me think that? Regardless, I found myself being grateful to be around her whenever she came to the office. It was already evening, with everyone having gone home by now. Well, maybe not everyone; I didn’t care to check every single person. Usually, by now, everyone would have left, at least on my floor of the building.

“You sure? You’re not messing with me, right?” Maryam seemed to care a lot about what I thought, which I appreciated. Anything beyond that, though, I needed to be careful.

“Yeah, it sounds better with the inflection at this point. You can hear the dissonance, and that gives the song that chaotic feel that you were aiming for.” I played the track again, and she listened attentively. Seeing her forehead crumpled and brows furrowed as she looked at the phone and keened herself made me happy. A hard worker who wanted to reach the top but still maintained her heart of gold. What more could a man want in a woman?

“Oh, wow! You’re so right!” She faced me with a beaming smile. Those cute, doe-eyes looked at me with joy. I’d never felt this way before … where someone’s smile and happiness could make me excited to be alive and in their presence.

“You look great,” the words escaped my mouth before I even had a chance to think. She looked surprised at my words, her smile slowly dissipating. It then hit me; I’d just made a pass at her. Fuck! She’d see me as some creep trying to take advantage of the talents. I should have kept my mouth shut. Saying that without knowing how she felt about me made no sense. Well, we had experienced many moments like the one when I almost kissed her, so I felt confident. Now, however, doubt crept into my mind.

“You think so?” Maryam’s cheeks blushed, and she ran her hands through her hair, looking away and trying not to smile. She didn’t back down or seem averse to what I said. This gave me the confidence to carry on. The feelings that grew in me for this woman from a small seed to a blooming flower, I couldn’t let them slide anymore.

“Yes.” Closing the gap between us, I had only one thing on my mind, kissing those amazing pink lips of hers. They looked slightly wet, and with every little movement they made, I became hungrier to kiss her.

“You’re … perfect.” My eyes went back up to hers when she leaned closer to me as well. She also stared at my lips. The rays of sunlight refracting through the glass hit her face at just the right angle. Maryam looked angelic, and I would be honored to have this moment with such an angel. Now, we were millimeters from one another, and her lips puckered for a kiss as she closed her eyes, giving her all to this moment. I watched those pretty eyes close while closing mine.

Then it happened. A kiss strong enough to bring time to a halt. I tasted the strength of her affection for me, and it felt great! The moment our mouths connected, neither of us could stop. To me, it was as if the Heavens had opened and poured the purest form of euphoria on me. Electricity running through, lighting shocks, inexplicable high. I felt all at once but didn’t feel exhausted. I got invigorated to do more. My hands held her cheeks, guiding her as our tongues danced together. Necks swiveling to accommodate the other and lips not willing to be separated. What I experienced was as perfect a kiss as I could ever get.

Maryam’s hands wrapped around my neck as my hand grabbed her by the waist, dragging her from her chair to fall on my lap. She didn’t mind. I think she liked my forwardness. We continued kissing, and I didn’t mind not breathing again if I could use my last breaths to enjoy this pristine moment.

Then my phone rang, causing Maryam to groan in dissatisfaction. We stopped kissing, taking a moment to breathe. Maryam got ostensibly frustrated but smiled when she saw me.

“Wow,”

“Yeah, that was… something,” she concurred before looking around to see if anyone saw us while I checked on my phone. Seeing Maddy as the Caller ID caused me to freeze.

“Is everything okay?” Maryam must have noticed my facial expression.

“Yeah, it’s my daughter calling.”

“I didn’t know you had a daughter.”

“Well, now you do,” I said with a smile. Based on her reaction, I could tell she felt some type of way about it, but we could discuss that later after I answered Maddy. I kept my daughter under wraps from the public for her protection after her mother died. The tabloids could be merciless, and her medical problems might be sensationalized for clicks. Despite my best efforts, it eventually came out that I had a daughter but her name and whereabouts still had conflicting reports, and I intended to keep it that way. Maddy also became more careful at giving away any information on her father. Only the school doctor that I called to check on her knew.

“Hello, Maddy?”

“Dad, hey,” Hearing her voice always put my heart at ease because of my eternal fear that something bad would happen to her. “Just wanted to let you know that school closes soon. I’ll be coming home then.”

I didn’t know how to react. On one hand, it pleased me that my daughter would return home where I could see her every day and take care of her if she had another episode. On the other hand, whenever Maddy came home, things got weird and tense. I never knew how to talk to her, and she barely gave me the time of day. Perhaps I could do better this time; and make more of an effort.

“That’s great. Just tell me what day and I’ll send Ron to come pick you up.”

“Alright, bye.” Every time we spoke, I had the feeling that she was in a hurry to leave.
