“Wait. How are things?” I found a way to keep the conversation going by asking about her health. With Maryam present, I didn’t want to reveal too much.

“What do you mean?”

“I haven’t spoken to Mrs. Elstridge.” Usually, I called her Dr. Elstridge, but because Maryam sat next to me, I didn’t want her to know a doctor was involved. It would lead her to ask questions that I hadn’t prepared myself to answer.

“Oh, that’s what you mean. Then why are you sounding so cryptic? I’m fine. No episodes. Felt a bit down, physically, a couple of days ago, so I went to see her. She gave me some drugs, and I’ve felt better since then.” Maddy had taken a lot of pharmaceuticals because we still couldn’t pinpoint the source of her biological issues. I felt so bad for her.

“Alright. Stay safe.”

“I will. You too.”

She cut the call, and my attention returned to Maryam. She didn’t look at me, but I knew she heard everything.

“So … you have a daughter.”

“Yes, I have a daughter. I like keeping her under wraps because of the media and all that. Don’t need to drag her into my world.”

“I get that. Her mother?” Maryam asking about that made sense. She just kissed me, so inquiring about me possibly having a wife, girlfriend, or baby mama would surely come up after realizing I had a kid. She probably didn’t want to get embroiled in any drama or be a homewrecker.

“Dead,” She gasped, her reaction changing from curiosity to horror. What fascinated me was how easily she felt grief for someone she had never met. Looking at her closely, I could tell Maryam genuinely felt sad that Maddy’s mother died.

“I’m so sorry.”

“You mean that, don’t you?” Everything about her amused me in the best possible way.

“Of course. It’s horrible to lose someone you care about.”

“She died many years ago. I’ll admit it was hard at first, but I’ve moved on from her. I’m in a good headspace now.”

Maddy smiled. “That’s good.” The air got awkward again and communication became bunglesome. I didn’t know how to segway to our kiss. We needed to address it, but how? Coming back from a kiss that amazing cannot be possible, I thought.

“What happened was a mistake, right?” I asked, trying to make sure we were on the same page.

“I mean, yeah.” She managed to say, still looking unsure. “We need to focus on our jobs, not kissing out and about. The album is the priority.”

“Yeah… yeah… that’s good.” Staring at her… my common sense eroded steadily. Before I could think, we were back at kissing, this time even making out with reckless abandon. I wanted her, every part of her. Maryam was smart, pretty, and sexy. I wanted to feel her breasts, so I grabbed them as she sucked on my neck. A light moan escaped her, but I didn’t stop. I continued to press her breasts through her clothes and bra. No one else was around, but the possibility that we might be found only heightened my excitement.

Our eyes met and the situation dawned on us yet again. This time, we calmed down, slowly stopping ourselves. My hand found it hard to leave the hold it had on her waist, however, and her hands couldn’t find the courage to take mine away. Hence, we simply stared at one another, our chests rising and falling.

“Things get dangerous when we are alone and together,” I spoke. “So, I think it is best if we try to avoid each other. Of course, we’ll still meet when necessary…”

“Hopefully, with others around,” she added, laughing nervously.

“Yes. So… deal?”

“Deal.”

I took my hands from her waist, and she moved back, straightening her skirt and picking her bag up. “I’ll see you around then… or not.” She smirked.

“Yeah,”

Maryam left my office and eventually, the floor. I breathed a sigh of relief. What the hell just happened? Dude, you gotta get a grip, or else, it could ruin everything.

Chapter seven

Maryam Carey’s POV

Ineverconsideredmyselfas one of those girls who loses sleep over a guy or pines over a man. Yet, here I sat, pining over one. A part of me felt ashamed that I’d let Ronald Razor creep into my heart. The longer we ignored each other, the harder it became for me to focus on anything else. And as a relatively unknown young lady joining a reputable record label, I needed to focus. If word of what we did got out, I had a feeling that it’d be me suffering the brunt of scrutiny.
