Being the CEO, I doubt much would happen to Ronald. I was meant to meet with Gale but he got held up in traffic. Carmen had work. Ronald and I weren’t talking despite him being around. Hopefully, I won't see him. Out of sight, out of mind, right? No, actually. It got way worse.

My phone rang, startling me, and I took it to check for the identity of the caller. Ma. I took a deep breath before answering the call. I hadn’t spoken to them in a couple of days and that made Ma worry.

“Hello, Ma,” I tried using a more upbeat tone, contrasting how I felt inside. I did not need them to know how I was messing things up for myself.

“How is my superstar!” Ma, in her typical hyper nature, bellowed into my ear through the phone. I’d gotten used to it, though. If she never started a call with some sort of shout or song for me.

"You sound good?"

"Yes, things are going pretty well."

"You told me you had been busy and that's why you couldn't call or answer some of our calls when we tried to get in touch the past couple of days."

As mom spoke, I almost laughed. It had only been four days, I think, and she was talking like it'd been a month or something. I loved it, though. I loved my parents, always thinking about me and calling me. Sometimes, this job could make you feel like the weight of the world dragged you down, but when you had anchors like I did, It made it easier to stick to what you love. I was forever grateful to my parents for letting me follow my path. They were the kinds of moral parents would love to be when I had kids,

"I'm glad you called. Things have been hectic."

"Oh, I'm sorry, honey, but I'm also not," Mom said. "Nothing great comes without pain and stress."

"I still can't believe my daughter is some big hotshot. I saw you in the news the other day. Your father was watching. Never seen him more excited in our entire years of marriage. I burst into laughter; this woman is gonna kill me with her quips.

Even though she exaggerated, I still felt proud that my father got very excited at seeing me on the TV. Things like this give me joy as a daughter.

"Don't worry, Ma, this is just the beginning. By the time the album comes out, it'll take us to new heights."

"Oh no, you don't have to say all this to us. You've already done so much for us, my daughter."

"Seriously. I'm only here because of you. How you two brought me up, I'm grateful and I promise you I will show my true gratitude."

I heard Ma scoff through the phone. "Haven't you already done enough for us? Not that I'm complaining, but you don't need to prove anything to me or your father via money or buying things for us, my darling. We have been proud of you since the day you were born." That hit me so hard that I could have started crying if I hadn't been in a conference room with transparent glasses where everyone could see me.

"Thanks, Ma."

"Just never forget your roots and forget why you are there. Don't go astray. Focus on the task at hand and show them that you are worthy."

Ironic that I worried about my lack of focus just before she called.

“Where’s Dad?”

“He went out with his friends for their typical snooker game.” I smiled. It gave me joy that he still enjoyed the little things such as that.

"Okay, Mom, be sure to greet him."

"Of course." She paused for a moment before speaking further. "Are you sure everything is okay?"

How did mothers always know? My mother had a way of always knowing when I didn't feel right… sometimes, before I even knew it myself.

"Yeah. Why would you ask that?"

"You just sound a bit off? A bit robotic. I hope those big shots have not begun to influence you over there?" She raised her voice, as expected. Having a conversation with my mother and her not raising her voice would be unthinkable, even in positive convos.

"Don't worry, I will never let myself get lost. I'm trying my best. I just feel happy knowing that the two of you are supporting me from home." I replied. "So, I'll try to make time to come visit when this whole label thing stabilizes and the first album is out."

"Okay, honey. We miss you. By the way, I finally bought that cooker I wanted to buy all this while," she informed me.

"Seriously?"

"Yes, with part of the last money you sent."
