“No. I don't need your sympathy.” She saw me crying and instantly scowled. “You can leave. Just go and stop hounding me!” She screamed, almost begging, even.

“No,” I said with an air of finality. She looked surprised at how much conviction I had in replying to her. “What is going on with you, Maddy?”

“You're not my mother. I don't owe you an answer.”

“No, I am not, and no, you don’t, but I'll keep asking until you answer me. You can keep pushing me away, but I’m not going anywhere.” Ron would never forgive me if I left right now and something dastardly happened to Maddy. And beyond that, I had a responsibility to this fragile teenager trying to act tough despite all she had gone through. I connected with this girl and her pain; that made me want to help her.

Roughly a minute later, the maids arrived. Maddy looked to be more receptive to them probably because she had known them longer than me. They were giving her the treatment that she needed. Based on how they acted, this looked like a common occurrence. Not the exact manner of her ‘episode’ but the fact that she needed help. They already knew where the tools and first aid kit were kept and kept referring to past times. I felt more at ease and quickly called Ron. Should have called him earlier, but I panicked.

“Hey, what's up?” He said after picking up the call.

“I don't know how to tell you this, but your daughter just had an issue.”

“What do you mean an issue?” The tone of his voice took a complete 180.

“I went to see her to talk after the awkward interaction yesterday when she arrived, but on getting there, I met her on the floor in the bathroom, coughing blood.”

“What the fuck?!” He exclaimed. I could hear shuffling at his end. Perhaps, we were rushing back home.

“Is she okay?! Where is she now?!”

“The maids are taking care of her. It's not too bad. She's much better now.”

“On my way.”

“All right.”

After the call, I decided to ask Draya what happened. She had been with Maddy but took a moment to check on me.

“Are you alright?” Draya inquired.

“Seriously? She’s the one you should be asking.” I retorted. “What happened to her, Draya?”

“It's one of her episodes.”

“What do you mean by episode?” Ron told me she had some medical issues, but nothing this serious.

“She's always had them since she was young. We had some serious ones sometimes when she was younger. Wasn’t even sure if she would live or die.”

“Jesus.” With every new information, I got sadder.

Is this what Ron and Maddy have been dealing with?

“Shouldn't she go to the hospital?”

“Her episodes now that she’s older aren’t as severe, and you called the boss, right?”

“Yes,”

“He’ll come with the private family doctor.”

“Okay. It hadn't crossed my mind, but it did make sense and sounded more reasonable to have a personalized doctor when you consider the paparazzi and the uniqueness of her condition.”

Ron finally arrived and as we expected, he came with an aged-looking doctor. Dr. Carl checked on Maddy and said it was a mix of a low blood sugar level and eating different foods from the ones on campus. I didn’t even know someone could cough blood from that. Ron and Dr. Carl agreed that the food issue had never been a problem until today, but that was the nature of Maddy’s biological conditions. Her white blood cells were incredibly weak, apparently, so new issues could arise out of nowhere. Dr. Carl decided to have as many tests as possible at home before we headed to the hospital for more at another time. Maddy hated tests, and she looked so miserable. It tore my heart apart.

I held Ron’s hand while resting my head on his shoulder. “She's going to be alright,” I reiterated to him. “She is going to be fine; everything will be okay. Don't think negatively, alright? Think positive.”

Ron still didn't say a word while he waited, but I could see it. That pain of watching his daughter get treated and checked out after she went through a horrible episode.
